Former Hiteman Girl Now in WAVES
Betty Jane Dixon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dixon, formerly of Hiteman, left Des Moines on January 3, to begin her basic training at Hunter college, as a member of the WAVES.
Miss Dixon was a graduate of Hiteman high school, and began nurses training at the University of Iowa, after which she was employed at the state hospital in Mt. Pleasant.
She was among the first ten women to be hired by the Iowa Ordnance plant at Burlington, working as a machine operator. She was at the plant during the first explosion.
Miss Dixon said she was not sure what sort of duties she would be assigned in the WAVES, but hoped she could get back into nursing.
