Mrs. Leah L. Blythe To Leave Monday for WAAC Basic Training

Mrs. Leah L. Blythe has been accepted into the WAACS and will leave Monday for Fort Des Moines for auxiliary training. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August G. Hartman, 1431 1/2 Bridge avenue.

Mrs. Blythe attended the Davenport schools graduating from Davenport high school. She has been employed by the Peter Pan Baking co.

A brother, Corp. George L. Hartman is now in advanced communications school at Camp Crowder, Mo. He has been in the service since July, 1942.

START TRAINING -- Leah Blythe, 1431 1/2 Bridge avenue, and Phyllis Kynett, 111 Perry street, left today for Des Moines, Ia., where they will start their basic training in the WAACS. They were accompanied by Miss Catherine and Miss Elizabeth Coughlin, 1221 Scott street, who will also start their training. The girls were recruited the Davenport office of the WAACS located in the postoffice building under the direction of Third Officer Margaret Murray.

WAAC DRIVER

Auxiliary Leah L. Blythe, 1431 1/2 Bridge avenue, Davenport, is learning the army's way of driving and maintaining its cars, trucks and jeeps, at downtown Des Moines. She recently completed her basic training at the First WAAC Training Center.

MEET ON FURLOUGH -- A surprise meeting of two old friends took place in Davenport this week when Staff Sergt. Leah Blythe, of the WACs and Helen Vaughn, yeoman, third class, of the WAVES, came home to enjoy a 15-day furlough and seven day leave, respectively. The girls, pictures above were friends for over three years before entering the service, having been employed together at the Peter Pan bakery.

Sergt. Blythe (left), the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Hartman, 14311/2 Bridge avenue, is in the motor corps at Ft. Lawton, Wash. She enlisted in the women's army corps seven months ago.

Yeoman Vaughn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Vaughn, 2917 Boles avenue, has completed her training at Iowa State Teachers' college, Cedar, Falls, and will report for duty on the west coast at the end of her leave.

Representing the feminine part of their families in service, the young women also each have a brother in uniform. Corp George Hartman has been in the coast artillery for over a year, an is stationed at Camp Haan, Calif. Pvt Fred Vaughn, of the army infantry, has seen action in New Guinea and is now in Australia. He has been in service for 25 months.

The WAC and the WAVE were pleasantly surprised at meeting on leave, and are now enjoying themselves by exchanging experiences in the two branches of service.
