Pvt. Carlas Tomes of Tabor Killed on Western Front
TABOR -- An official telegram from the war department brings the news that Pvt. Carlas Tomes, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Cordus Tomes, was killed Dec. 12 in action in Germany. In addition to his parents he is survived by his widow and two sons, Donald, 9, a pupil in the fourth grade in the Tabor school, and David, 2.
He was born in Edmonson county, Kentucky, coming to this section of Iowa with his parents at the age of two years. His home for the greater part of his life has been in this community. He received his education in the Randolph and Strahan schools and then engaged in farming. He entered the service March 30, 1944, having previously been engaged as a ship fitter in the shipyards at Portland, Ore. Before taking this employment he had been on a farm northeast of Tabor.
His widow and children returned to Tabor in September so her older son might attend school, and his parents returned here Dec. 9. His father had been employed for two years in the shipyards at Portland and Vancouver.

Carlas “Carl” Tomes was born June 18, 1915. He died Dec. 12, 1944 and is buried in Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland, OR.
