Herbert Joseph “Mick” Thomas was born Feb. 11, 1919 to Richard Dearl and Katheryn Gaffney Thomas. He died Dec. 16, 2010 and is buried in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, IA.
Chief Petty Officer Thomas served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Nitro FFT (AE-2), USS John D. Ford (DD-228), USS Black Hawk (AD-9), USS Talbot (DD-114) and USS Sculpin (SS-191). He survived the sinking of the Sculpin and became a Japanese POW until the end of the war. He received two Good Conduct Medals and the Silver Star.
