Lt. Richard K. Sunderbruch

 

 

 

REUNION - Lt. Richard K. Sunderbruch of Davenport, Iowa, a Signal Corps photographic officer, kisses his wife, Lt. Jane I. Sunderbruch, Army Nurse Corps, as they met somewhere on the European continent for the first time after they went into service. The signal corps officer was wounded at Aachen and since he was returned to duty, and his wife is assigned to an evacuation hospital.

"Husband and wife serving in uniform meet for the first time on the continent - Lieut. Jane I. Sunderbruch, Army Nurse Corps, assigned to an evacuation hospital, and her husband, Lieut. Richard K. Sunderbruch, Davenport, Iowa, Signal Corps photographic officer. He was wounded in the battle of Aachen; has since returned to duty. 11/6/44"

They had married May 30th, 1943, in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. They had only been married a little over a year and 5 months when this photograph was taken.

The Sunderbruchs survived the war. Richard died in 1992 and his wife died in 2006. They are buried together in the Fairmount Cemetery in Scott County Iowa. They had been married for nearly 49 1/2 years when Richard passed away.
