Richard Shelquist is Wounded at Tarawa
Word has been received by Mrs. Mary Shelquist, who lives 5 miles east of Albia, that her son, Richard, was wounded in the battle of Tarawa.
Mrs. Shelquist received a letter from her son in December, stating that he had been wounded in the island battle, but official notification did not come through until Tuesday. Richard stated in his letter that the wound had been caused by shrapnel. He is serving with the Marines.

Richard Allen Shelquist was born Mar. 31, 1923 to Harry and Mary Susan Forsythe Shelquist. He died Apr. 18, 1945 and is buried in Service Chapel Cemetery, Bluff Creek, IA.
Sgt. Shelquist served in World War II with the U.S. Army 69th Infantry Division, 271st Regiment of the 1st Army. He died in Germany in the service of his country.
