Receives Medal For Husband
Receives Medal—Mrs. Ione C. Piel, 1013 Nebraska Street, is shown receiving the air medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters for her husband, Technical Sergeant Derrell C. Piel, listed as missing in action over Germany. First Lieut. T.H. Garret, bombardier instructor at the Sioux City army air base, made the presentation.
Sergeant Piel was awarded the medal for 15 aerial combat missions made against the axis over enemy occupied Europe during which he displayed a courage and coolness worthy of the army air forces. He previously was awarded the people heart, which Mrs. Piel is wearing.
Lieut. Garret is a veteran of the North Africa Theater of operation. He had recently completed a book written about his experiences while overseas. The book which has been approved by the war department will soon be in the hands of the publishers.
