Jerry Michaelson, 81, Jewell, died of cancer Monday, Dec. 4, 2000 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell with the Rev. Dale Peterson to officiate. Burial will follow at the Roland Cemetery, Roland. Friends may call Thursday at the Becker Funeral Home in Jewell from 6:30 -8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to the Bethesda Lutheran Church, Montgomery Memorial Library or Jewell Fire and Rescue.

Jerry A. Michaelson, son of Jeffrey and Amanda Thompson Michaelson, was born Dec. 20, 1918. He graduated from Roland High school in 1937 where he was active in athletics. He attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On April 25, 1940, he married Lois Twedt in Hawarden. Moving to Jewell, he helped his mother at the Penny Saver Store. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific, the Philippines, and with the occupation forces in Japan. Following the war, he returned to Jewell and worked as a contractor and brick mason for 32 years, retiring in 1983. He was a charter member of the Jewell Golf and Country Club, the American Legion, and Bethesda Lutheran Church, where he served as a trustee.

Survivors are his wife, Lois of Jewell, a daughter and son-in-law, Jerilyn and Gary Klaver of Ames, a son and daughter-in-law, James and Sonjia Michaelson of Eldora; five grandchildren, Jay Klaver, Tom Klaver, Heather McKinley, Greg Michaelson, and Holly Stanke; two great-grandsons, Hayden Klaver and Will McKinley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
