Francis Anthony McKone was born July 26, 1906 to Charles Henry and Anna Margaret Bollinger McKone. He died Dec. 8, 1942 and is memorialized at the East Coast Memorial, New York, NY. He has a cenotaph in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Lawler, IA.
Petty Officer McKone served in World War II with the U.S. Navy as part of the Navy Armed Guard crew that was assigned to the SS James McKay, an American merchant ship. He was MIA/FOD/KIA when that vessel was hit by three torpedoes fired from German submarine U-600 and sank with 48 Merchant Mariners and 14 U.S. Navy Armed Guards on board. None survived. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
