LT. MATHRE DOWNS 500TH JAP PLANE FOR FIGHTER UNIT

Second Lt. Milden Mathre, of this city, a P-38 fighter pilot, recently shot down the 500th Jap plane credited to his fighter group, according to an Associated Press dispatch from Leyte air base in the Philippines.

Lieutenant Mathre, whose wife lives at Cedar Falls, is a member of the 49th fighter group, the first army air unit to fight in the southwest Pacific.

The 500-plane mark was a new record for fighter groups but did not stand for long since the same contingent of airmen have now added 30 more planes to their credit.

Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur has termed the 49th “unsurpassed in the air."
