Masil J. Mason was born Oct. 2, 1914 to Joseph Roy ‘Roy’ and Lola Madge ‘Madge’ Silvers Mason. He died June 5, 2005 and is buried in St. John’s Cemetery, Ellicott City, MD.

Masil J. Mason, 90, Maryland

Masil J. Mason, a retired official of the U. S. Immigration Service, retired Border Patrolman and retired Navy Chief Yeoman died peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning from complications of pancreatic cancer at Howard County General Hospital. He was 90 years old.

Masil is survived by his wife of 53 years, Charlotte J. Mason, his son and daughter-in-law, William Scott Mason and Patricia Ann Stoos, his grandson, Matthew Scott Mason, his brother, Jack Mervin Mason, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie Eloise Mason and his brother Myles Silvers Mason.

Masil J. Mason was born and raised on the Mason Cattle Farm on October 2, 1914 in Freedom Township, Hamilton County, Iowa of which Webster City is the county seat. His parents were Roy Mason and Madge Mason (nee Silvers) He was the oldest of three boys and one girl. He attended and graduated from Lincoln High School in Webster City in 1932. In September, 1933, Masil enlisted in the Navy and served on the U.S.S. San Francisco and the U.S.S. Quincy on their shakedown cruises. He was Honorably Discharged in September, 1937. Masil joined the U. S. Border Patrol in July, 1940 and graduated from the border patrol school in November, 1940. Masil joined the Naval Reserves in March, 1942, during World War II. He was Honorably Discharged in March, 1946. After leaving the military, Masil joined the U. S. Immigration Service, where he rose through the ranks and served in many high level positions across the country and in Washington, D.C. until he retired in December, 1973. After retirement, Masil continued to make regular trips back to the family farm, a Century Farm, south of Webster City.

Masil and Charlotte Mason (nee Hilgeman) married on May 5, 1952. They had one child, William Scott Mason. In his retirement, Masil, known as Mace to his family and friends, enjoyed golfing, fishing, socializing, gardening, was an avid reader, followed politics, and stayed fit by exercising. Most of all, he greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Matt Mason.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 9 at 1 p.m. at Witzke’s Funeral Home. Internment will be in a bright, sunny resting place at the St. John’s Cemetery in Ellicott City. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
