Merle Olene Marcus, son of Johanna Braland Marcus and LeRoy Marcus, was born December 5, 1922 at Ellsworth, and passed away at his home in Ellsworth June 21 at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 16 days. He spent most of his life in the Ellsworth community.
He graduated from the Ellsworth High School in 1940 and later owned and operated a cafe in Ellsworth and then built the A & M Grocery store in Ellsworth, retiring in 1984. He still continued to work. He served in World War II and was injured in the war, and received the Purple Heart.
Merle was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW and was a past commander of the post and a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by three brothers, Vernon R. Marcus of New Carlisle, Ind., LeRoy Marcus, Jr., of West Liberty and Mervin B. Marcus of Ames. Also, two nieces, Denise and Deann. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 25, 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth with Pastor Arthur Vorhees officiating. Burial will be made in Homewood Cemetery, Ellsworth with Military rites at the grave. Home Danielson is the soloist and Cindy Caruth, organist.
Pallbearers are Dale Thompson, Wayne Brinton, Raymond Anderson, Ned Seaman, Dean Erbes, and Donald Hovda.
