TRUMAN CITATION SENT TO PARENTS OF W. C. SOLDIER
A memorial citation signed by President Harry Truman has been received here by Mr. and Mrs. I. P. Lichtenberger, parents of Pfc. George L. Lichtenberger, who died July 29 at San Diego of injuries received in a train-truck accident.
A letter from the soldier’s commanding officer has also been received giving the details of the accident at the San Diego marine base when a railroad boxcar struck the searchlight trailer on which the Webster City young man was riding. His injuries necessitated a skin grafting operation but he reportedly died while under the anesthetic.
The citation from President Truman says in part:
“In grateful memory of Pfc. George L. Lichtenberger who died in service of his country in the American area, July 29, 1945. He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live and grow and increase its blessing. Freedom lives and through it he lives in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men.”

George L. Lichtenberger was born June 16, 1921 to Ira Percy ‘Percy’ and Vera L. David Lichtenberger. He died July 29, 1945, at San Diego, CA.
He died as a result of an accident.
