Paul Hockman, 93, of Jewell, died on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Jewell United Church of Christ. Burial with military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015, at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Jewell United Church of Christ or the Jewell Fire and Rescue Squad. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is caring for Paul and his family.
Paul LeRoy Hockman was born on Jan. 28, 1922, in Cincinnati, Iowa, to Roy and Fannie (Smith) Hockman. He grew up in the Ames area, graduating from Ames High School in 1940. Paul was a painter with his dad, Roy Hockman &Sons, and later he attended Iowa State College. He was a metallurgy inspector for the Ankeny Ordinance Plant, joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. On Jan. 4, 1943, Paul married Rene Berrett in Princeton, Mo. They moved to Jewell where Paul and Rene owned and operated Paul’s U-Save on Main Street from 1957 until building Paul’s Super Value in 1964. They operated their grocery business until 1994. He was a member of Grocers Association. Paul was also a member of Jewell United Church of Christ, American Legion, Jewell Golf and Country Club and Jewell Lions Club and was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. Paul enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and golf. He loved his wife, and gave her unselfish care through her illness, and also loved his family and friends.
Paul is survived by one daughter, Julie (Jerrold) Twedt, of Omaha; two sons, Steve (Cyndy) Hockman, of Ankeny, and Rusty (Peggy) Hockman, of Jewell; six grandchildren, Brad (Stacy) Twedt, Darcy Twedt (John) Cottone, Chris Hockman, Brandt Hockman, Ashley Hockman and Jeremy Hockman; five great-grandchildren, McKenna Cottone, Kyle Cottone, Olivia Twedt, Jay Twedt and Ethan Hockman; and one sister, Lynda (Oge) Forre, of Slater.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rene, in 2014; two sisters, Maxine Ersland and Phyllis White; and two brothers, Bill and Jackie Hockman.
