Carl Edmund Ehlert was born Jan. 17, 1922 to Ed Franz and Lena Carolina Boger Ehlert. He died Apr. 11, 2009 in Polson, MT.
Petty Officer Ehlert served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as an airman/mechanic.

Carl Ehlert, 87, of Polson, Mont., and formerly of Vandalia, died on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at his daughter's home.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, at Grogan's Funeral Home in Polson, Mont.
Mr. Ehlert was born in 1922 in Schleswig, Iowa. He married Elizabeth Joan Davies in 1945.
He attended Webster City High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Iowa State College. He taught high school agriculture in Iowa and joined Swift & Co. Chemical Division in Litchfield in 1954, working with the company until 1967. He then returned to school, earning a master's degree at Southern Illinois University, and then taught for 20 years at Vandalia Correctional Center. He moved to Polson, Mont., five years ago to be near his daughter and son. He was an airman/mechanic in the Navy, serving during World War II. He served on the Litchfield Board of Education, was a Boy Scout leader and was an elder at St. James Lutheran Church in Vandalia. After moving to Polson, he volunteered at St. Joseph Medical Center. He enjoyed gardening, wine-making, beekeeping, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his daughter, Anita and her husband Barry Hansen of Polson, Mont.; son, Steven Ehlert and his wife Vicki of Spokane, Wash.; sisters, Loraine Groves and Delores Arends, both of Iowa; and grandchildren, Stephanie Ehlert, Robin Leabman, Scott Ehlert, Elizabeth Hansen and Warren Hansen.
