Hurt In Car Crash
A car accident occurred early Thanksgiving morning, two miles south of Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa, in which several persons were injured. In one car were Mr. and Mrs. John G. Den Herder and their granddaughter Karen Ruth, all of Hull, and Mrs. Gertrude Smedley and Miss Alberta Lucas both of Alton. They were enroute home from Omaha, where they had spent the preceding day and evening with the intention of meeting Seaman and Mrs. Gerald Den Herder who were coming home on leave from Hayward, Calif. As the train was several hours late, the Sioux County folks decided to come on home, and left Omaha at 10:15 p.m. Near the bluffs at 1:15 a.m. an oncoming motorist sideswiped the Den Herder car, turning it completely around and rolling it over a few times. The car landed on its wheels. Mr. Den Herder, in order to avoid the crash, had driven his car onto the shoulder and thus avoided a head-on collision. The Den Herders and Karen Ruth were thrown from the front seat through the doors onto the pavement. Mrs. Smedley and Miss Lucas were found on the floor in the back seat.
Two Sioux City cars following picked up the injured, and took them to St. Vincents hospital Sioux City and reported the matter to the police.
Mr. Den Herder suffered back injuries including a cracked vertebra. Mrs. Smedley sustained cracked ribs and possible arm injuries, Mrs. Den Herder a gash under one eye and bruises, Karen Ruth a gash under the chin and Miss Lucas bruises on one knee. The latter three were dismissed the same day.
The Den Herder car was badly damaged. The other car, from Sioux City, was not badly damaged and no one was hurt.
S 1/c and Mrs. Gerald Den Herder arrived Thursday morning from Omaha and went to Sioux City that afternoon to be with their parents at the hospital.
