A surprise farewell gathering was held last Thursday evening at the school house five miles east of town for John H. De Groot, Jr. who left for the army last Friday.

John H. De Groot Jr. has a change of address. He is now at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was formerly at Camp Robinson, Ark. He writes he is staying in a grand hotel, four stories high, marble floors, etc., and is attending a field artillery school. His present address is:

Pfc. John H. De Groot Jr. is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. De Groot living east of town. He is a member of the 170th Infantry Bn. and works with an 81 millimeter gun. He has recently received his promotion to Private First Class. His address is: Co. D. 170th Inf. Bn., Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Miss Hilda Van Ginkel Weds John H. De Groot Thursday
An impressive double ring ceremony took place Thursday, October 21st, at 2:00 p.m. in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Van Ginkel, when their niece, Hilda Van Ginkel of Artesia, Calif., and John H. De Groot Jr. of Fort Sill, Oklahoma, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. De Groot of Sioux Center, formerly of Hull, were united in marriage.
The groom’s former pastor, Rev. G. H. Douwstra performed the ceremony in the presence of the immediate relatives.
The bride’s mother and sister, of Artesia, Calif., arrived last week to attend the wedding.
The groom, who has served in the army for one year, will leave again soon for Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Jan. 19 in the home of John H. De Groot a surprise was given in honor of PFC John De Groot Jr., in the presence of Mrs. John De Groot Jr., Anna De Groot of Bellflower, Calif., John H. De Groot, William De Groot, Mary Ann De Groot, the children of Herman Schiebout of Ireton, Mr. and Mrs. Bill De Groot of Middleburg, Mr. and Mrs. Herman De Groot of Orange City, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Schiebout of Sioux Center, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Voortman and daughter of Sioux Center, Mrs. Abe Schiebout, Mrs. Ben Schiebout, Mr. and Mrs. Abe De Groot and families, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry De Groot. The evening was spent by playing games and singing psalms and hymns. Mrs. Anna De Groot and Mrs. John De Groot Jr. will leave for California soon.

Mr. John De Groot was called to California the past week to meet his son, Pvt. John De Groot Jr., who came home form England, having been wounded in action some time ago. He arrived in New York the early part of last week and was taken to California by plane where he is now in a hospital.

Mrs. Edward Swager and Mrs. Cornelius Van Ginkel of Artesia, Mrs. John Schoeneveld and daughter Harriet Elaine of Downey, Mrs. Nellie Van Ginkel, Mrs. John H. De Groot Jr. and Rich Wichers of Bellflower went to Palm Springs, Calif. to see Pfc. John H. De Groot Jr. in the Torney General Hospital. Rich Wichers took Johnnie’s sisters and wife up to Palm Springs.

RECEIVED HONORABLE DISCHARGE
John H. De Groot Jr., who returned to the states a few weeks ago suffering from severe shell shock, has been given his honorable discharge from the service and is now living at the home of his sister in Bellflower, Calif. When he is a little more improved, he plans to come home to Sioux Center.

John H. De Groot Jr. 37440458 was born Sept. 13, 1921 in Hull, Iowa and lived at RFD Rt. #1, Sioux Center, Iowa when he was inducted into the army on Nov. 6, 1942 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served with the 30th Inf. Div., left for overseas duty on Feb. 12, 1944 and returned on Sept. 5, 1944. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 4, 1944. His application for his bonus pay was filed in Los Angeles County, California on Oct. 10, 1949, for which he earned a bonus of $257.50 for his military service.
