Dr. Cowan Will Be Major in Medical Corps: Gets Leave
Called to active duty as a surgeon (major) in the United States public health service, Dr. John A. Cowan, director of the board of health, was granted a leave of absence by the city council Friday.
He has been director of the county board of health, Sioux City board of health and district health service for Iowa, since November 1, 1940.
The state department of health, Woodbury County and the city council are considering possible candidates to fill the position.
Dr. Cowan, who held the commission on a reserve status, has been ordered to report for active duty March 26 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
His wife and small daughter, Suzanne will accompany him.
