Des Moines- Arthur Thomas Burns, 23, Sioux City civilian veteran of five Japanese attacks on Midway Island enlisted today in the United States Navy---with a hope of being sent back to Midway and farther.
“I want to go on to Tokyo and finish this up in time to return here for Christmas dinner with Santa Claus,” Burns said, fingering a photograph of Mrs. Burns and the tiny Katherine Clare, 15 months.
Burns went to Midway Island last September. He was a refrigeration worker with a general construction company.
He wasn’t hurt in any of the attacks.
Burns is leaving his wife, the former Alma Cussen and baby girl with Mrs. Burns for the duration. His mother now lives in Boise, Idaho, but he has two older brothers, James and John Burns in Sioux City.
Burns who will have a rating of fireman first class will leave immediately for naval training.
