Two Waterloo Men Reported Killed in Action
Get Further Report About Man Now Missing.
Two more Waterloo men were reported killed in action Saturday, according to telegrams received from the war department by their parents and further information was also received concerning a third Waterloo man, who had previously been reported missing in action.
Those killed in action were:
Pfc. Richard L. Smith, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd J. Smith, 1316 Hawthorne avenue, killed in action Jan. 31 in Belgium, while serving with an infantry unit attached to the Third army.
Pfc. James Burton Murley, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Murley, 532 Randall street, killed in action on Jan. 19 in France, while serving with the army medical corps.
Pvt. James Edward Hutchens, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Hutchens, 206 Harwood avenue, listed as missing in action since Dec. 25.
Private Smith was employed at the Johnson Dairy before entering the service in March, 1944. He trained at Camp Roberts, Cal., and Ft. Jackson, S. D., and arrived in England in October. He was transferred to France in November and had since served in Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium.
Born Dec. 7, 1927 in Waterloo, the son of Lloyd and Lulu Smith, he resided here and attended West side schools.
Surviving besides his parents is one brother, Tech. 5th Gr. Orval, with the medical corps at Santa Barbara, Cal.; one sister, Irene, at [Page 23] home; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Thomas Blood, 1647 Forest avenue, and Mrs. Robert Stow, also residing at 1316 Hawthorne.

Richard Lloyd Smith was born Dec. 7, 1925 to Lloyd and Lulu Frances Brown Smith. He died Jan. 31, 1945 and is buried in Waterloo Memorial Park, Waterloo, IA.
