A. W. Sherren, Pilot, Missing Over Japan
First Lt. Albert W. Sherren, 23, P-51 pilot, has been missing in action over Japan since July 8, according to a war department telegram received Thursday by his father, Russell Sherren, 1240 Wallgate avenue.
The officer, whose mother, Mrs. L. J. Doemerman, lives in Cedar Rapids, Ia., has been in service since May 12, 1942, and overseas since shortly after he was commissioned at Luke Field, Ariz., in September, 1943. The last letter received from him by his father was dated July 6, at which time he was based on Iwo Jima.
A graduate of Colorado Springs, Colo., high school, Lieutenant Sherren was employed here by National Cash Register Co., before entering service.
A brother, Arthur Sherren, aviation machinist’s mate third class, is serving overseas on a Liberator bomber.

Missing Pilot Now Listed as Dead
Capt. Albert Sherren, 23, missing in action since July 8, 1945, has been officially declared dead, his father, Russell Sherren, 1240 Wallgate avenue, has been notified by the war department.
Sherren, a P-51 fighter pilot, was stationed on Iwo Jima at the time of his death.
He enlisted May 12, 1942, and took his pre-flight training at Santa Ana, Cal., where he was accepted for pilot’s training. He received his primary training at Tulare, Cal., basic training at Merced, Cal., advanced training at Luke field, Ariz., where he was commissioned a second lieutenant, Sept. 1, 1943. In Nov. 1943, he was sent to Hawaii and was later transferred to Iwo Jima, where his unit escorted heavy bombers on flights over Tokyo.
On a mission, July 8, 1945, he was injured by enemy gunfire on a strafing run and after radioing his flight commander that he had sustained a head injury and could not see, headed for his base, and was believed to have crashed in the Pacific ocean.
Born Nov. 5, 1921, at Lamont, Ia., he was the son of Russell and Cora Mae Sherren. He graduated from the Colorado Springs, Colo., high school and was employed by the National Cash Register Co., in Waterloo prior to his enlistment.
Surviving besides his father are his mother, Mrs. L. J. Doemerman, Cedar Rapids, Ia., and a brother, Arthur, 417 Logan avenue.

Capt. Albert Walter Sherren was born Nov. 5, 1921 to Russell and Cora May De Grief Sherren. He died July 8, 1945 and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii.
