Pvt. Edgar Schietzelt Was With Seventh Army
Pvt. Edgar W. Schietzelt, 26-year-old rifleman with the Seventh army, was killed in action in Germany March 28, the War Department has informed the family, 2311 Ninth street.
The soldier, a graduate of East high school in 1938, had been in the front lines recently for eight weeks. Then he had entered a rest camp for a week and had returned to the lines March 26.
He was home on furlough in September from Camp Roberts and went from there to Fort Meade, Md., for a new assignment in October. He went overseas, landed in Italy and moved with his division of infantry February 14 into northern France.
A letter to the family here, dated March 26, said he had seen considerable front line fighting but that he was well. Before entering the service, he was a butcher for Swift & Co.
He was born in Sioux City April 6, 1919, and he enlisted April 21, 1944. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic church.
Surviving are the widow, Mary Francis; two sons, Larry, 4, and Gary, 3; a daughter, Maurine, 1 ½; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Schietzelt, 1713 S. Patterson street; two brothers, Pfc. John Schietzelt, a student of medicine at the University of Iowa, and Donald at home, and a sister, Helen, of Detroit.
Plans are being made to hold a memorial requiem mass in St. Joseph’s Catholic church for the native Sioux Cityan.

Pvt. Edgar W. Schietzelt served in World War II with the 71st Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division. He is buried in Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
