SIOUX CITYAN WRITES FOLKS ABOUT HOW HE CAPTURED 9 GERMANS
Sgt. Norman C. Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Peterson, 2612 Douglas street, is stationed with the Seventh army and has been on the front lines in France and Germany for more than six months. In a letter to his parents, he described some of his experiences on the battlefront. One episode was as follows:
“I must tell you about a little scare I had one night. We were on an attack and about dusk stopped a short time on a road below a wooded hill, and naturally started to dig as we do every time we stop. I heard some noises directly above me in the woods so I stopped digging and crawled up on the bank to listen. Finally decided they were Germans up there so just called to them. Nothing happened so I went down, got the machine gun, put it up on the bank and told them to come down or I’d shoot. Asked them twice. I was already to splatter the woods when one walked out. He called out eight others so I lined them up and started to search them. Of course, a bunch of guys started to gather around. They’re afraid to take any prisoners but are more than willing to search them.”
Sgt. Peterson has been slightly wounded six times by shrapnel. He has received the presidential citation and a bronze star for participation in battle.
