Local Soldier Dies at Ft. Knox
Pvt. Donald P. McCauley, 1308 Avenue B, one of the three sons of Mr. and Mrs. William McCauley in the armed forces, died Thursday at Fort Knox, Ky., according to word received here Thursday.
Pvt. McCauley contracted an infection while on maneuvers and died of pneumonia in the base hospital. His wife, Mrs. Martha McCauley, whom he married last June, left Council Bluffs last week to be with him. He enlisted Jan. 6, 1943, and was attached to the 573rd bomber squadron at Ft. Knox. Prior to enlistment he attended Thomas Jefferson high school.
Besides his widow and parents, he is survived by three brothers, Cpl. Earl McCauley with the U. S. army invasion forces in Italy, 1st Lt. Merle McCauley stationed at Harrington, Kan., and Lyle McCauley of Council Bluffs; five sisters, Mrs. Marl Wright and Edith, Velma, Helen and Jean McCauley of Council Bluffs, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. G. McClain of Cherokee.
Woodring’s funeral home is in charge of arrangements. The body is expected to arrive in Council Bluffs Saturday morning. Military funeral services are being planned.

Donald Perry McCauley was born Nov. 14, 1922 to William George and Mae Ruth Dixon McCauley. He died Nov. 3, 1943 and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Council Bluffs, IA.
Pvt. McCauley served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 573rd Bomb Squadron.
