Government Officials Notify Parents Son Took Part in Action
GARNER--Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Jante were notified by government officials Sunday that their son, Edwin Earl Jante, 22, yeoman third class, is missing following action in the performance of duty. Mr. and Mrs. Jante have three other sons, Elmer and LaVerne, Gamer, and Curtis, at home. Mrs. Kenneth Becker, Clear Lake, and Mrs. Charles McCabe, Charles City, are daughters. Mr. Jante had been in the service nearly three years.

GARNER--Word has been received from the navy department that Edwin Jante, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Jante of Garner, is reported missing since the recent attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Edwin has been in the navy for the past two years and was stationed on the battleship Arizona which was sunk. He was graduated from the Garner high school with the class of 1938.

Government Declares Edwin E. Jante Dead
CLEAR LAKE -- Relatives of Edwin Earl Jante, Garner, yeoman third class on the U. S. S. Arizona which was sunk in the Pearl Harbor attack Dec. 7, who was reported missing, have been notified by the government that, after 'due search, he has not been found and is therefore declared officially dead. Mr. Jante was a brother of Mrs. Kenneth Becker and known to many in Clear Lake. Relatives plan to hold a memorial service for him at a date to be announced.

Memorial to Be at St. John's Church
GARNER--A memorial service for Edwin Earl Jante, 22 who was missing following the action at Pearl Harbor last Dec. 7 and has now been declared dead by the United States government, will be held at St. John's Lutheran church three miles northwest of Ventura and seven miles northeast of Garner Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. W. T. Wolfram, pastor, will be in charge. Mr. Jante, who was yeoman second class on the U. S. S. Arizona and had been in the service two years, will be accorded full military honors by Garner post of the American Legion members of which will attend the services in a body.

MEMORIAL IS HELD FOR JANTE
Youth Missing After Pearl Harbor Given Military Honors.
GARNER --Memorial services for Edwin Earl Jante, 22, yeoman second class on the U. S. S. Arizona when it went down during the action at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, were held at St. John's Lutheran church northeast of Garner Sunday afternoon. The Rev. W. T. Wolfram, pastor, was in charge of the services. Members of Garner American Legion post attended in a body and conducted the military rites.

A large picture of Mr. Jante on a lighted easel draped with bunting stood at the front of the church. Tall baskets of flowers were placed at either side. A special piece was an anchor of flowers presented by the Walther league of which Mr. Jante was a former member. At the close a curtain of black crepe was lowered over the picture. As members of the family entered the church Mrs. Wolfram played the music of "America.". The church choir sang appropriate hymns during the service. John Surballe sounded taps and Albert Ellman the echo. The honorary escort, each wearing a boutonniere in the national colors, included Arnold Pueggel, Clear Lake; Kermit Schultz, Forest City, and Vernon Ristau, Garner, members of Mr. Jante's confirmation class; Harold Hall, a cousin, and Bert Anderson and Ambrose Kern, high school classmates.
Ward's funeral home made the arrangements.

Mr. Jante was born Feb. 18, 1920, at the farm home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Jante, and was baptized the same day. A twin sister, Edna, died at birth. He attended the nearby rural school and St. John's parochial school, being confirmed in 1934. In 1938 he was graduated from Garner high school. He enlisted in the navy
Jan. 23, 1940, and was a secretary in the office of the U. S. S. Arizona when the attack came. He had made one visit home since his enlistment. Besides his parents, Mr. Jante is survived by two sisters, Mrs Charle McCabe, Charles City, and Mrs. Kenneth Becker, Clear Lake; three brothers, Elmer, Garner and LuVerne and Curtis, at home, his grandmother, Mrs. John Dietz, Rothsay, Minn., and many more distant relatives.

Garner Youth Was Killed in Action at Pearl Harbor
GARNER--The main auditorium and basement of St. John's Lutheran church were filled to overflowving at the memorial service conducted for Edwin Earl Jante, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Jante, who was reported killed in action at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7. The Rev. W. T. Wolfram delivered a stirring memorial message. The vested choir of St. John's sang three selections. Military honors were accorded Yeoman Jante by the Gifford Olson post of the American Legion.

Iowa’s World War II Honor Roll

They came from all sections of the state, from all walks of life, and they rest today in strange and far away but never-to-be forgotten places.
