Leeds High Grad Wounded in Early Iwo Jima Fighting
Pfc. Elvin L. Henshaw of the marine corps was wounded by shrapnel February 19, 1945, in the early stages of the fight for Iwo Jima, according to official notification received recently by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Henshaw, 4221 Tyler street.
The parents had received one letter from their son, written from a hospital in Hawaii, before official notification was received from the Navy department.
Pvt. Henshaw, a graduate of Leeds high school, enlisted in the marine corps in December, 1943, and went overseas as a member of the Fifth marine division in October, 1944.
