ADVANCED TRAINING
Aviation Cadet Duane E. Gamet, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. James I. Gamet, 1835 S. Olive street, has finished four weeks training at the Santa Ana, Cal., air base and is commencing advanced flight training at the Santa Maria, Cal., air base, according to word received from his parents.
Duane graduated from Leeds high school in January this year, and reported for duty with the air corps June 7, in Des Moines.

Sioux City Man Floats to Safety as Plane Crashes
Lieut. Duane E. Gamet, son of Mr. and Mrs. James I. Gamet, 1835 S. Olive street, copilot of an army transport, was one of two Iowa men who parachuted to safety with other soldiers Monday night when their army transport crashed landed at Lovelock, Nev., on its way from Billings, Mont., to Reno, Nev., according to messages received here by his mother.
Parachuting to safety were all passengers and crew members except a radio operator, whose parachute failed in his attempt to escape, according to Mrs. Gamet. First news of her son’s experience came in a telegram from him to his mother Wednesday night, and Thursday by telephone he confirmed the message.

Duane Ellsworth Gamet was born Aug. 14, 1923 to James Irving and Beulah Blanche Ellsworth Gamet. He died Aug. 19, 1944 and is buried in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA.
2nd Lt. Garnet served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 1328th Base Unit.
