Swaledale Navy Man Commissioned Ensign
on Dec. 14, New York
Cecil Duane Foell, son of Mrs. Jennie Foell, Swaledale, was among 1,023 men commissioned as ensigns, U. S. N. R., in ceremonies held on Dec. 14 in the cathedral of St. John in the Divine, New York City, it was announced by the U. S. naval midshipmen’s school there.

Ensign Foell Was Among
Those Lost on Indianapolis
Swaledale Officer Had Served on Ship
Since Last May
Ensign Cecil D. Foell, son of Mrs. Jennie Foell of Swaledale, who was reported missing on the USS Indianapolis sunk last July 30, was among those who lost their lives at that time, it was learned here Wednesday.
Ensign Foell had reported for duty on the Indianapolis last May 2 and on it was sent to the Pacific. The ship, commanded by Capt. Charles MacVay, now being fried for neglect of duty, sank between Guam and Leyte after being hit by a submarine torpedo with about 300 men rescued out of the 11 or 12 hundred men on board.
Foell was born in Sheffield on May 31, 1923. He was graduated from the Swaledale high school and had attended a year at Upper Iowa university, Fayette, when he enlisted in the navy V-12 program on Dec. 8, 1942.
He was appointed ensign on Dec. 13, 1944, and a few days later reported to Hollywood, Fla., for temporary active duty under instruction. He later took further training at Gulfport, Miss.
Ensign Foell was given a posthumous award of the purple heart and held the Asiatic-Pacific area campaign medal.
