Pfc. Edwin W. Dix was awarded the Purple Heart for back and leg burns received from a phosphorous grenade while in action on the Philippines sometime during February, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Dix, 207 East Second street.
Private Dix, who has been serving overseas for the past six months, was previously stationed on New Guinea. Before entering service in February, 1943, he was employed by the John Deere Tractor Co.
A brother, Marine Pfc. Harold H. Dix, is with the Third marine division in the south Pacific area.

Pfc. Edwin Dix Killed on Luzon
Pfc. Edwin W. Dix, 21, was killed in action Mar. 31 on Luzon, a war department telegram informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Dix, 207 East Second street, Tuesday.
Private Dix was fighting with Company L of the 128th infantry, with whom he has been stationed in the Philippines since last October. He left for overseas duty in May, 1944, and was stationed in New Guinea before being transferred to the Philippines.
Burned on the leg and back from a phosphorous grenade while in action in the Philippines in February, 1944, Private Dix was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
He had been employed by the John Deere Tractor Co. before entering service in February, 1943. His training was received at Camp Howze, Tex., and Camp Livingston, La.
Born Oct. 26, 1923, near Jubilee, Ia., in Fox township, Black Hawk county, the son of Otto and Marie Janneck Dix, he came to Waterloo with his family in 1926. Here he attended East side schools, graduating from East high school in June, 1942. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church.
Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Marine Pfc. Harold Dix, in the south Pacific, and Walter Dix, 209 East Second street, and one sister, Mrs. Harry Purington, 812 North Barclay street.

Dix Services Wednesday
Pfc. Edwin W. Dix will be reburied Wednesday after services at O’Keefe & Towne funeral home at 1:30 p. m.
Dix was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Dix, 207 East Second street. Rev. Walter D. Oetting, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran church, will officiate. Waterloo Amvets will be in charge of military honors at Fairview cemetery.
Private Dix, 21 at the time of his death, was killed Mar. 31, 1945, on Luzon, P. I. He had been wounded in earlier fighting in the Philippines Islands in 1944.
He was employed by John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works before entering the service in February of 1943.
