In a letter written to the home folks August 19th, Leonard Carpenter tells of his promotion to Staff Sergeant and of taking part in the invasion of southern France. Leonard was with the first American troops that landed in Africa and was in on the first of the invasion there. He then took part in the invasion of Sicily and following that the invasion of Italy, then was at the Anzio beachhead.

Leonard Bert Carpenter was born Oct. 1, 1916 to Bert Cleveland and Nellie Fay Tuel Carpenter. He died Nov. 10, 2003 and is buried in Lakeview Gardens Cemetery, Spirit Lake, IA.
