Akron, Iowa – Claude Burrill, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Burrill, has left for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to be inducted into the army.

AKRON SOLDIER RECOMMENDED FOR MILITARY ACADEMY
Pvt. Claude W. Burrill Gets Cong. C. B. Hoeven’s Appointment For Honor  

Congressman Charles B. Hoeven announces the following nominations for appointment of principals and alternates to the United States Military Academy at West Point, effective July 2, 1945.

Principal:  John Donald Woodson, Sioux City, Iowa.
First Alternate:  Charles Prescot Hindt, Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Second Alternate: Mahlon Allison Smith, II, Sioux City, Iowa.
Third Alternate:  Nicholas M. Demetroulis, Sioux City, Iowa.

Principal: Claude Wesley Burrill, Akron, Iowa.
First Alternate:  Robert C. Davenport, Sioux City, Iowa.
Second Alternate: John M. Thomas, Ida Grove, Iowa.
Third Alternate: Gail Byron Hamilton, Sioux City, Iowa.

All nominees are now in the armed forces of the United States and took the qualifying Civil Service examination last July.

Pvt. Burrill entered the Army one and a half years ago, after being graduated with honors from Akron high school and also being an engineering student at Iowa State College, Ames, for two quarters.  He took his basic training at Camp McClellan, Alabama, following which he was assigned for further training at North Dakota State College, Fargo, and at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.  He was transferred from Camp Gruber to an east coast base.  The young man’s many friends wish him success in the aspiration for appointment to the U. S. Military Academy.

Claude Wesley Burrill was born Feb. 19, 1925 to Lowell and Olivia A. Scheckel Burrill. He died Oct. 20, 2008 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Akron, IA.
