MISSING IN ACTION
The Wm. Burkhalter family, in the Mercer Center neighborhood, received the sad news Sunday, that their son and brother, S. Sgt. Edwin A. Burkhalter, was missing in action January 1, 1945, on the Western Front in Germany. The word came from the War Department to Edwin’s wife who lives in Des Moines and relayed to the family in Adams County. Sgt. Burkhalter was with the 7th Army and has been in service since February 15, 1941. He went overseas last October.

Edwin August Burkhalter was born May 1, 1916 to William and Louise Heuwinkel Burkhalter. He died Aug. 15, 1992 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Coin, IA.
Sgt. Burkhalter served with the U.S. Army in World War II.
