News Has Come Recently
24 In Germany
Messages from men who have been held prisoners of war by the German government since their capture Feb. 17, 1943, at Faid pass, North Africa, continue to come to their relatives at home. The first came Monday evening, May 14, and each day more are received.
Two other men held prisoners by the Germans, Staff Sgt. Malcolm Bishop of Churdan and Pfc. Alvin Schilling of Jefferson, who were not members of the guard company, also have been liberated.
Word came Wednesday to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bishop of Churdan in a V-mail from their son, Staff Sgt. Samuel Malcolm Bishop, that he had been liberated April 29 by the Yanks after having been in the hands of the Germans since March 6, 1944. His letter was written the first of May. He said he was all right and expected to be home soon. He went down over enemy territory when his plane, a B-17, was downed. He was a ball turret gunner, stationed with the eighth air force in England. He entered the service in November of 1942.

Samuel Malcolm Bishop was born Aug. 1, 1924 to Samuel Harrison “Harry" and Mamie B. Mizel Bishop. He died June 25, 2003 and is buried in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, TX.
M/Sgt. Bishop served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a POW and received the Bronze Star Medal.
