Sgt. Clifford W. Benedict

COMMENDED FOR WORK OVERSEAS

First Sergeant Clifford W. Benedict, 1315 Avenue I, Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been commended for exceptionally meritorious conduct while serving with the 34th division on the 5th army front in Italy.

When the first sergeant of his company was fatally wounded, Benedict, then a technical sergeant, took over his duties. A mortar shell had landed in the company command post and destroyed all the records pertaining to the company in combat and its personnel. When the battalion was relieved, he obtained a company roster, then gathered together the remaining members of the company where he gained additional information. After one and a half months work, Benedict finally accomplished the task of getting the company’s morning report and rosters up to date.

“The high quality of work accomplished by Sergeant Benedict resulted in a successful reorganization of the company,” the citation said.
