Willard “Jack” Nelson, 76, Woolstock, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Woodbury, Minn. Funeral services will be held at the Washington Lutheran Church at Duncombe, with Rev. David Deckard officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Lutheran Cemetery south of Duncombe. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #491 of Duncombe. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. Monday and at the church after 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Willard Raymond Nelson, son of Walter and Helena Hanson Nelson, was born August 15, 1925 on a farm in Fremont Township, northeast of Duncombe. He attended a rural school in Fremont Township and the Duncombe Public School. During W W II, he served with the US Navy 8th Beach Battalion in Europe and Hawaii. On Jan. 7, 1953, he married Rose Marie Boyd at Rockwell City. The couple resided at Fort Dodge, then moved to Duncombe in 1962. He had worked at Woodruff-Evans Construction. He went back to school and in 1974 received his high school diploma the same year as his daughter, Ann. In 1977, the couple moved to Woolstock. Mrs. Nelson died August 3, 1999 and he continued to reside in Woolstock.
He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Ann and Eric Wilson of Austin, Texas, Julie and Paul Runge of Woodbury, Minn.; grandchildren Daniel and Lydia Runge, brother, Mark Nelson of Fort Dodge, several nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Harry and Lloyd Nelson, sisters Christina Mallinger, and one in infancy.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the Washington Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed and a church trustee. While living in Fort Dodge, they attended St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Kenneth LeRoy Newbrough was born Apr. 2, 1924 to Lester L. and Anna Irene Johnson Newbrough. He died Nov. 22, 2000 and is buried in the Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery, Storm Lake, IA.
Kenneth was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was the holder of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal.

Mr. Newbrough was born April 2, 1924, in Vincent, Iowa, the son of Lester and Anna (Johnson) Newbrough. He attended country school in Colfax Township and graduated from Fort Dodge (Iowa) Senior High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. 8th Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a B-17 turret and tail gunner with the 398th Bombardment Group/603rd Squadron, 1st Air Division, stationed in Nuthampstead, England. He flew 31 missions. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He married Dorothy M. “Pat” White on April 8, 1944, in Badger, Iowa. The couple had lived in several Iowa communities. They moved to Storm Lake in 1977. He was employed with Seig Co. in Iowa Falls Carroll, Storm Lake and Fort Dodge. He then became a co-owner of Storm Lake Honda, retiring in 1986. His wife died Aug. 3, 2000. He was a member of Storm Lake United Methodist Church, Fort Dodge Senior High Alumni Association, Elks Lodge, 32nd Degree Mason, Jewel Masonic Lodge 309 of Storm Lake, Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City, Sioux City Consistory, American Legion Post 115 of Alta, Iowa, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6172, Eighth Air Force Historical Society and Lake Creek Country Club. He enjoyed playing cards and golfing.
Survivors include three daughters, Pat Schug of Pocahontas, Iowa, Peg and her husband, Larry Schultz of Storm Lake, and Pam and her husband, Craig Phillips of Pocahontas; seven grandchildren, Jed, Dan and Katie Schug, Jeff and Kelly Schultz and Jose and Jake Phillips; a sister and her husband, Helen and Dick Cooper of Caldwell, Idaho; five sisters-in-law, Louise and her husband, Ernie Thiessen of Paso Robles, Calif., Maxine Wilcox of Sioux City, Betty Meyer of Fort Dodge, Orrine and her husband, Dic Chute of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Jo and her husband, Jake Stahl of Lafayette, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; Raymond; a sister, Leila; and a son-in-law, Jay Schug.

William Robert Martin AKA William Robert Martin Newsum was born May 22, 1925 to Irvin Martin and Anna Heyerhoff Martin. He died Nov. 20, 1944 and has a cenotaph in North Lawn Cemetery, Fort Dodge, IA. He was the step-son of Leonard A. Newsum.
Pvt. Newsum served in World War II with the U.S. Army 320th Infantry, 35th Division and was KIA in the European area.

Billie James Nitzel was born Aug. 4, 1921 to Edward Herman and Floy Martin Nitzel. He died Oct. 30, 1944, was buried at sea, and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.
Petty Officer Nitzel served in World War II with the U.S. Navy and was KIA while in the service of his country. He was awarded the Air Medal.
