Fred E. “Hazzie” Haselton was born Oct. 1, 1921 to Fred D. and Hattie Howard Haselton. He died Aug 30, 1944 and is buried in Shaul Cemetery, Ottumwa, IA.
Pvt. Haselton served in World War II with the U.S. Army 125th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron and was KIA as the result of a direct hit on the armored car in which he was serving as gunner. Haselton’s vehicle, lead car in the reconnaissance platoon, was caught in heavy fire from a concealed enemy antitank weapon. He remained at his post, firing into the enemy position until he was killed. He received the Silver Star and Purple Heart awards.
