John Norton Thompson was born May 29, 1924 to Ivan Newell and Gladys L. Thompson. He died Mar.19, 1945, was buried at sea, and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Court 4, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii and has a cenotaph in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, IA.
Sgt. Thompson served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps Marine Flying Squadron 214 (VMF214), Marine Air Group 11 (MAG11) and served aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13) and was KIA when a Japanese bomber hit the Franklin off the coast of Japan. There were 31 armed and fueled aircraft on the flight deck. The resulting explosions and fires killed 807 and wounded 487 marines and sailors onboard. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
