He was a veteran of World War I where he served with Co. A, 2nd Provisional Ordnance Dept. ammunition supply section and served in France. He re-entered active military service in Jan. of 1941. Capt. Cowles served with the U.S. Army as Commanding Officer for Service Company, 113th Cavalry at Camp Bowie in Brownwood, TX. He died from a blood clot after developing pneumonia and suffering a heart attack.

His son, Rollin James Cowles, III was born Mar. 30, 1921 to Rollin James (Jr.) and Ruth Whitlach Cowles. He died Jan. 22, 2010 and is buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, IA.
Capt. Cowles served in World War II with the U.S. Army 113th Cavalry and attended Iowa State University after his service, obtaining his graduate degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1950.
