Sheldon, Iowa – Edward J. Fiest of Sheldon, stationed at Camp Kearns, Utah, has finished his basic training and been promoted to lecturer and instructor on aircraft identification as a member of the personnel staff of the camp. He is also one of the staff artists helping to publish the weekly camp newspaper.
Mapleton, Iowa-- Capt. Everett G. Tripp, owner of the Mapleton, Iowa Press, who returned to duty in the army in April after serving two years in the first World War and then returned in the infantry reserve corps, is attending an army refresher course at Camp Wallace and learning about the new antiaircraft weapons. Mrs. Tripp and daughter, Joan, are living in Galveston, about 20 miles from Camp Wallace.
Sloan, Iowa—Sergeant J.H. Low, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Low of Sloan, Iowa, is spending a 10-day furlough at the home of his parents. Sergeant Low enlisted December 3, 1942 and is stationed at Camp Claiborne.
Salix, Iowa—Two residents of Salix reported for duty at the Farragut, Idaho, naval base. They are Oliver A. Kinnaman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vet Kinnaman and Henry A. Bertrand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bertrand.

Moville, Iowa-- Auxiliary Dorothy Weaver, member of the Waacs, DesMoines, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Weaver.
Moville, Iowa – Sergeant and Mrs. Jack Larkin, Burbank, California are spending 10 days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Larkin and other relatives. Sergeant Larkins is in the coast artillery.
Maple Hill, Iowa—George Enderson, seaman second class, has just returned to his ship at San Francisco after an 18-day leave here. Enderson has been in two major battles in the Guadalcanal area and said that his unit assisted in sinking enemy submarines in the South Pacific.
Wallingford, Iowa- Paul K. Groth, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Groth, is a captain in the marine corps. He enlisted in the marines in May, 1941 and has been in foreign service for several months.
Salix, Iowa - Oliver Allen Kinnaman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vet Kinnaman, rural route 1, and Henry Alfred Bertrand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bertrand, have reported for “boot” training at the Farragut, Idaho, naval training station.
Hospers, Iowa- Third Class Petty Officer Willis Helder arrived unexpectedly from New York for a short leave with his mother, Mrs. Dena Helder. Since his enlistment in September he has visited Ireland, North Africa, Iceland and other points. Willis will leave Saturday to report to his ship.

Spencer, Iowa—Mr. and Mrs. George L. Veitch of Greenville received a message from the Red Cross that their son, Donald G. Veitch, is a prisoner of war of the Germans.
Pocahontas, Iowa – Corporal George Bilskemper, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bilskemper of Lake township, Pocahontas County, was killed in action in the North Africa area April 9, according to word received by his parents from the war department.

Sheldon, Iowa – Lieut K.W. Myers of Sheldon, stationed at the Sioux City air base in the medical corps, spent Mother’s Day here visiting his wife and family and other relatives.
Sheldon, Iowa—Kenneth A. Johnson, former music instructor in the Sheldon Public Schools, is now stationed at Sioux Falls as instructor at the air base.
Anthon, Iowa—John James Eickholt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Eickholt, has arrived at the State Teachers College, Eau Clair, Wisconsin for army air force instruction prior to his appointment as an aviation cadet.
Cushing, Iowa—Corporal Reynold G. Grell, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Grell, has been enrolled in a special course of instruction at the signal corps school at Camp Murphy, Forida.

Sheldon, Iowa—Willie Schmidt of Sheldon, stationed at Minneapolis in the naval air corps, is home on a furlough visiting his mother and other relatives.
Sheldon, Iowa—Henry Houtsma son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Houtsma of Hospers and a nephew of Mrs. O.D. Kapsen of Sheldon, received two pieces of shrapnel in one foot, which had to be operated on in Africa, according to a letter received by his parents at Hospers.
Sheldon, Iowa—Miss Alice Miner of Sheldon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Miner of Emery, South Dakota and Sergeant Al Bothmer of Portland, Oregon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bothmer of Sheldon, were married in Sioux City Saturday. Sergeant Bothmer is spending a furlough in Sheldon with his wife and other relatives and friends.
Spencer, Iowa – Two youths from this area, Delmar Eugene Morfitt of Harris and Arlo Lloyd Bohn of Spirit Lake, have been sworn into the naval reserve. They applied for enlistment through the Spencer recruiting station.

John Herbert Neely, Jr., son of Rev. and Mrs. John Neely, 14 ½ W. Third Street, has been promoted from private to corporal. He is stationed at Richmond army base, Richmond, Va.
Private James K. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Smith, 3427 Third Avenue has completed basic training at Keesler field, Mississippi and has been transferred to Chicago University for meteorology training.
Private Eugene S. Markland, 18, congratulated his mother, Mrs. Leo Ellis, 4122 Ridge Avenue, on her birthday Saturday by telephoning her from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he is attending officer’s training school.
Wayne Terrill, 18, who has finished “boot” training in the Seabees at Camp Endicott, Rhode Island, is spending a nine-day leave with his father, Wayne Terrill and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. F.O. Terrill, 1610 Villa Avenue.
Harold Linafelter, pretty officer second class, left for Norfolk, Va. after spending a seven-day leave witrh his mother, Mrs. Marian Nooney, 1007 Ninth Street. He came here from South Richmond, Va.
Staff Sergeant Charles D. Isbell of Correctionville has been transferred to officer’s candidate school at Fort Still, Oklahoma. Private J. C. Isbell, a brother, is taking preflight training at Ouachita college, Arkadelphia, Ark.
Lloyd E. Johnson, who formerly resided at 3300 Jones Street, has been promoted from private first class to corporal at Fort Collins, Colorado. Mrs. Johnson now resides at 322 S. College Avenue, Fort Collins.
William T. Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Peterson, San Diego, California and a former Sioux Cityan has been promoted to corporal. He is attending college at Baton Rouge, La. Corporal Peterson was graduated from Central high school and was employed by the Livestock National bank. He left Sioux City two years ago to work in the Bank of America in San Diego.
Robert S. Vane, son of Rev. and Mrs. W.J. Vane, 1307 Court Street, has been promoted to staff sergeant. He is stationed somewhere in England.
First Lieut. Morgan Harrison who completed pilot training at Valdosta, Ga., and who received his wings March 25, is in charge of army aviation weather service at Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Harrison is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hammerstrom, 1722 W. Third Street, and the lieutenant is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Willis M. Prichard, 2215 S. Cedar Street. Lieut. And Mrs. Harrison and their son reside in Atlanta.
Ira P. Schwarz, who will graduate from the United States navy school of music Thursday, is spending a 10-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Schwartz, 3630 Vine Avenue. He is a former Morningside college student and was a member of the Sioux City Symphony orchestra and Monahan Post Band.
Private First Class Kenneth Asplund, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Asplund, 1662 W. 30th Street is taking a seven-week course in aviation mechanics at Sheppard field, Texas. He is a Central High School graduate.
Drew Whitehead, the husband of Ann Whitehead, 1414 Leech Avenue, began recruit training this week at the Farragut naval training station, Farragut, Idaho.
R.B. Tompkins, who formerly lived here, has been promoted to machinist’s mate second class in the navy. He now is on sea duty.
Leonard I. Barricks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barricks, 1115 W. Sixth Street, has been promoted from private to corporal at the army air force proving ground at Elgin field, Florida. Corporal Barricks has been in the army since June 3, 1942.
Sergeant Max Smith has returned to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, after a 10-day furlough here. His wife, children and mother, Mrs. Winifred Smith, accompanied him to Kansas to live.
L.D. Kneeland, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kneeland, has arrived at Grand Rapids, Mich., where he has been assigned as a student in the weather training school of the army air forces technical training command.
Aviation Cadet Edward P. Meents is home on furlough from Bakersfield, Cal., for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Schultz and his sister, Miss Orgine Meents, 1500 Pierce Street. He will report to Stockton, Cal., for advanced training.

Ed Gloory has been promoted from Corporal to sergeant in the army air forces at Chanute field, Illinois. He is a son-in-law of Mrs. Fred Becker, 1517 Willis Avenue. His wife, the former Doris Becker, is with him at Chanute field.
Private First Class Harold V. O’Connor, stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon, is spending a furlough with his mother, Mrs. Agnes O’Connor, 514 Otoe Street.
Corporal Lyle W. Rockwood, 12091/2 Grandview Boulevard, is attending the antiaircraft artillery school at Camp Davis, North Carolina.

Private Donald L. Mook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mook, route 1, is stationed at Springfield, Missouri, where he is attending the army air force medical school.
William Arthur Reynders, son of Arthur Reynders, 119 S. Helen Street, has been accepted by the Mather field cadet examining board for aviation cadet training. He will be stationed at the army air base at Santa Ana, California for preflight training. Reynders attended East High School.
Corporal Grant L. Jensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Jensen, 3415 Seventh Avenue, has enrolled in a radio electrician’s course in the armored force communication department at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Corporal Joseph Perez has completed advanced army air force ground crew training at the Douglas Aircraft Corporation, Santa Monica, California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Perez, 404 S. Wall Street.
Albert E. Ackerman, 713 ½ Sioux Street, stationed at Camp Ripley, Minnesota, has been promoted to technician fourth grade.
Lieut. John D. Thomson, air corps, stationed at Selfridge field, Michigan, has been assigned to an altitude training unit. Lieut. Thomson is the son of Dr. and Mrs. J.A. Thomson, 2410 Court Street. His wife resides at Iowa City.
Robert H. Drain, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Drain, 3225 Lewiston Street, has been promoted to sergeant. Sergeant Drain is stationed at El Toro, California.
Private J.R. Tokarczyk, marines, is spending an eight-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Tokarczyk, 1023 S. Fairmount Street. He is stationed at Camp Leyeune, New River, North Carolina. His brother, Air Cadet Walter J. Tokarczyk, will be graduate from Moore field May 24 as a pursuit pilot.
Private C. Curtis, stationed with a field artillery unit at Camp Roberts, California, has been advanced to corporal. Corporal Curtis’ wife resides at 3605 ½ Third Avenue.
Capt. Everton Jones, a former Sioux City dentist, has been graduated from the medical field service school at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Jones and their two children reside at 107 Gilman terrace.
Ray L. Connelly, stationed with the coast guard at Scituate, Mass., has been promoted to seaman first class. He was graduated from East High School in 1941 and before entering the coast guard was head messenger for a packing company here. His brother, Gene Connelly, who was graduated from East High School, is stationed with the army air forces at Atlantic City, N.J. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. L. Otto Connelly, 1126 S. St. Mary’s Street.
Private James W. Dixon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Dixon, 304 Ninth Street, has been transferred from Camp Cooke, California to the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon for training in meterology.
Private First Class Bertel Tagstrom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Tagstrom, 1306 25th Street, has been transferred from Clearwater, Florida to Camp Crowder, Missouri where he is receiving instruction in the air corps radio school.
Technical Sergeant Carleton G. Brouhard is here on seven-day furlough, visiting his wife and son, who are making their home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Brouhard, 2402 Chields Avenue. Sergeant Brouhard is stationed at the Jackson, Miss., air base.

Milton W. Alingh, 1620 S. St. Aubin Street; Feldman F. Jones, 3118 Dearborn Avenue and Robert L. Boswell, 2609 W. Solway Street, have arrived at the engineer replacement training center at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Warren R. Johnson, who attended Central High School, is a preaviation cadet stationed at the army air force basic training center at Kearns, Utah.
Private First Class Burdette Clausen left Friday for McChord field, Washington, after a 15-day furlough spent in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Clausen, 309 W. 14th Street. Also visitors here at the same time were his wife and daughter.
Edward P. Meents, Jr., son of Mrs. John Schultz, 1500 Pierce Street, has been graduated from the army air forces basic flying school, Minter field, California. Cadet Meents has been sent to an advanced training school.
Second Lieut. Robert J. Petrucka, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Petrucka, 1501 S. Royce Street, recently received his bombardier wings on graduation from the Roswell advanced flying school, New Mexico. He is a graduate of the navigation school at Carlsbad army air field, Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Sergeant Stanley F. Karpuk, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Karpuk, 12217 S. Linn Street, has returned to Camp Barkeley, Texas after a 15-day furlough with his parents and wife. The latter resides with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Harsley, 2646 S. Cedar Street.
Elwood A. Berg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Berg, formerly of Sioux City, is visiting his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Clausen, 1614 Virginia Street. He is stationed at Farragut, Idaho, where he recently completed boot training. He has the rating of seaman second class.
Second Lieut. Clifford Bradley Schrunk, a son of Mrs. Hazel Anne Schrunk, 1315 S. Glass Street, now is on duty at South Plains army air field in Lubbock, Texas where he is a pilot.
Duane Lewis Hilburn, torpedo man third class is spending a seven-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Hilburn, 106 Oak Street, before reporting to active duty on the west coast. He has completed training at the naval torpedo station at Newport, R.I.
William C. Harstad, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs M.S. Harstad, 3618 Pierce Street, was graduated recently from the hospital corps school at the naval hospital at Great Lakes.

Private Neild M. Bower, member of the army medical corps, is stationed at Camp Kohler. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Bower, 4436 Garfield Street.
Richard O. Burg, seaman second class, has returned to Camp Endicott, Davisville, Rhode Island, after spending a nine-day furlough visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Burg, 3438 Dupont Street and relatives. He enlisted in the Seabees, January 22.
Staff Sergeant Charles Warren, another son of O.E. Burg is stationed in North Africa. He was inducted from Chicago, Illinois into the army in July 1941.
Private Bernie Lehman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Lehman, 3051 Valley Drive, has arrived from Drew Field, Florida to spend a 15-day furlough with his parents
Marvin Berens, seaman second class in the Seabees, has returned to his post at Camp Endicott, Davisville, Rhode Island, after spending a 10-day leave visiting his wife and infant daughter, who live at 110 Main Street, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Berens, 2204 Geneva Street.
A.F. Anderson, aviation radio man first class, is spending a 10-day furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Anderson, 912 29th Street. He will report back to a naval bomber squadron May 27.
Apprentice Seaman Mansfield John Caus, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Rowe, 1613 W. 1613 W. 18th Street, has arrived from Farragut, Idaho, to spend a 12-day leave with his parents. His brother-in-law, Lester Carl Ericsson, recently arrived at Farragut to begin basic training. Mr. Ericsson’s wife and baby son are living with her parents at 1613 W. 18th Street.
Cadet Robert F. Wagstaff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred R. Wagstaff, 1912 S. Cecelia Street, has been assigned as a student in the weather training school of the army air forces at Grand Rapids, Michigan.
John H. Muldowney, son of Mrs. H.J. Muldowney, 1110 Sixth Street, has been promoted to corporal. He is stationed at New Orleans, La.
Richard C. Hodges was graduated from the army air forces flexible gunnery school at Kingman, Arizona, recently. He is the son of Mrs. Vona Claussen, Sergeant Bluff.
Preaviation Cadet Russell G. Peters is stationed at the army air forces basic training center at Kearns, Utah. He attended Central High School here.
Mary Louise Courey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Couney, 1009 Eighth Street, has been sworn into the women’s reserve of the Marine Corps. Soon she will enter a navy training school.

James F. Legg, brother of Mrs. Charles Zaleckis, 509 14th Street, has been promoted to staff sergeant at Camp Campbell, Kentucky.
Lieut. George R. Pullman, son of Rev. and Mrs. George C. Pullman, 1617 Jackson Street, is personnel officer at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
James C. Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emery A. Stewart, 321 S. John Street, has graduated with a class of aerial gunners at the Harlingen army air field in Texas. Completion of the course and another technical course automatically entitles him to sergeant’s chevrons.
Donald J. Ward, 514 S. Helen Street and Richard Rensch, 1815 Douglas Street, have been classified as pilots at San Antonio field, Texas. Ward entered the service January 31, 1943 and took cadet training at Creighton University. Rensch entered service February 1 and took cadet training at Morningside College.
James Willard Severson, whose wife resides at 1910 S. Palmetto Street; Bernard William Smith, whose wife lives at 1307 Court Street and John Parker Cleveland, son of Mr. and Mrs. I.J. Cleveland, 229 S. Fairmount Street, have reported for training at the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho.
Private Judson C. Follett, an aviation Cadet, has been transferred from Atlantic City, N.J. to the University of Pittsburgh, Pa. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Longval, 1823 Jones Street, and a son of Judson G. Follett, a former Sioux Cityan now of Los Angeles, California.
Seaman First Class Herman H. (Babe) Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Peterson, 1905 S. Hennepin Street, has returned to Santa Cruz, California, where he is stationed as a member of the coast guard mounted patrol, after spending a 14-day furlough with his parents and his wife and daughter Judy, 2606 Villa Avenue.
Corporal Fred H. De Witt has returned to Fort Still, Oklahoma, after spending a 15-day furlough with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. DeWitt, 1637 Palmer Avenue.
Private First Class Leon M. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Johnson, 1923 S. Helen Street, has been graduated as an expert mechanic in the army air forces at Keesler field, Mississippi. He will help repair B-24 Liberators.
Raymond John Cusack, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Cusack, 2215 Jackson Street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the army after completion of an officer’s candidate course at in infantry school at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was inducted February 18. Lieut. Cusack was graduated from Central High School and Georgetown University at Washington, D.C.
First Lieut. Morgan R. Harrison, who formerly resided at 2215 S. Cedar Street, now is stationed weather officer at the Atlanta army air base in Georgia. Formerly he was stationed at Maxwell field, Alabama.’’
Aviation Cadet Richard A. Beacon, 1621 Douglas Street, was among 227 Iowa’s and eight Sioux Cityans, who completed basic pilot training at San Antonio aviation cadet center in Texas. Other Sioux Cityans include Norman S. Echols, 918 Court Street, Robert E. Hine, 1505 Ruby Street, Guy R. Nettleton, 1215 S. Newton Street, Robert K. Raeside, 1301 23d Street, Scotty C. Reynolds, 2036 S. Lakeport Street, Warren R. Silzer, 3419 Douglas Street and John L. Stine 1518 Villa Avenue.
Aviation Cadet Donald L. Lawrenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph C. Lawrenson, 2523 First Street, has been graduated to the upper class of flying students at the Majors field, Texas, basic flying school. Cadet Lawrenson was employed as an office worker by Swift & Co., before receiving his appointment as an aviation cadet.
Seaman Second Class Norman LeRoy Olson is spending a 12-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Eunice Olson and sister Maryann at 2731 Third Street.

Anthon, Iowa – Private Elmer G. Koehler of Anthon has arrived at the finance replacement training center at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana to begin his basic training in finance. He is the husband of Mrs. Naida G. Koehler and the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Koehler of Anthon. Prior to his induction he was a teller in the Anthon First Trust and Savings bank.
Salix, Iowa – Private Donald Zimmerman returned to Camp Phillips, Kansas, after spending a furlough with his mother here. Mr. Zimmerman was employed by the Farmers Elevator Company before his induction into the army.

Lieut. Richard C. Dineen of the army air corps has departed for his post at Alpena, Michigan after a week’s visit with his aunt, Mrs. J.S. McGrath, 515 30th Street.
Dwain R. Fick, aviation radio man, third class, has returned to Corpus Christi, Texas, after a 15-day leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Fick, 1509 27th Street.
Corporal Dennis Fahey, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fahey of Oregon and former Sioux Cityans, has been transferred from Camp Callan, California to Los Angeles for radio training.

Private Carl G. Morgan, son of Mr. and Mrs F.D. Morgan, 2112 Boies Street was injured in action in Africa May 7, his parents have been informed. He was previously reported injured April 10. He serves with a Calvary reconnaissance outfit.
Private Leonard L. Branch, son of Mrs. Mae Branch, 1922 Ingleside Avenue, has been transferred from Buckley field, Colorado to Lowrey No. 2 field, Colorado. He is attending an aerial gunnery school.
Private Walter L. Switzer, who is stationed in the air corps at Miami Beach, Florida, is spending a 15-day furlough with his wife who lives at 1322 S. Alice Street and with his parents, brother and sister who live at 1420 S. Linn Street.
Aviation Cadet Student George D. Walston, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Walston, 4420 Garfield Street, has been transferred from Sheppard field, Texas to Butler University, Indianapolis.

Charles Edward House, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edna M. House, 1304 ½ Douglas Street is receiving basic training at the infantry replacement center at Camp Roberts, California. Before his induction he was employed by a motor company at Lincoln, Nebraska.
Aviation Cadet James P. Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar M. Olson, 325 36th Street, has been transferred from Atlantic City, N. J to Rochester, New York where he is attending Rochester Business institute.
Private First Class Jack Winkler, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Winkler, 3505 Seventh Avenue is home on a 10-day furlough from Camp Barkley, Texas.

Rolfe, Iowa – Arthur Bendixen, 34, son of Mrs. Nellie Bendixen here, was accidentally killed by the premature explosion of a shell fired from a field gun at camp Granite, California. Funeral services were held last week at the Rolfes Methodist Church.
Peterson, Iowa – Special: Gunner’s Mate Ralph Woolridge is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Woolridge. Ralph has just returned from his second trip to England.
Odebolt, Iowa—Donald Huebner has returned home from Bethesda, Maryland, where he had been a surgical patient for six months in the national naval medical center hospital. He suffered a head injury when the ship he was on was torpedoed a year ago last February. He has received a medical discharge from the navy and is visiting in the home of his mother, Mrs. Arthur Anderson.
After graduating from high school five years ago Donald enlisted in the navy and had attained the rating of musician, first class.
Odebolt, Iowa—Kenneth Sorensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sorensen who enlisted in the navy two weeks ago, is now stationed at Camp Ward, Farragut, Idaho.

Moville, Iowa—Private Vernon R. Keuck, stationed at Alliance, Nebraska spent a three-day furlough with his father, B.W. Keuck of Moville and other relatives; Mr. Keuck has two other sons in the service, Corporal Herman W. Keuck, who is an instructor in airplane mechanic at Sheppard field, Texas and Private First Class Leonard G. Keuck, who is stationed somewhere in North Africa.
Cushing, Iowa—Corporal Howard Parker has returned to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, after spending a short furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.F. Parker.
Spencer, Iowa – Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Swanson, prominent Clay County farmer of near Royal, have received word that their son, Capt. John Swanson, is missing in action. He was piloting a bomber from a base in the British Isles.
Hospers, Iowa—Private First Class Maynard Kykstra and Private First Class John Vanderpol, both of Fort Devens, Boston, Mass., are enjoying a furlough with relatives and friends, the former, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mason Dykstra and the latter, his wife and baby and father.

Ireton, Iowa—Mrs. Harry Vellinga has received word that her son, Private Marion Vellinga of North Camp Polk, Louisiana, has been promoted to the rank of corporal.
Ireton, Iowa—Elmer Muth, son of Albert Muth, farmer living northwest of here, was recently promoted from private first class to a corporal. He is stationed at the general hospital, Camp Livingston, Louisiana.
Ireton, Iowa—Private Gilbert Wallenbeerg, who formerly farmed north of here, was taken prisoner while in a battle on the Tunisian front in Africa. Last week his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ring Wallenberg received word that he was a prisoner of war in Germany. In a letter from him he stated he was in good health and instructions were given to send a package through the Red Cross and also what might be sent.

Moville, Iowa—Private Vernon Keuck of Alliance, Nebraska, spent the weekend with his father, Ben Keuck. Private Ralph Hunting is spending a foulough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hunting. He is stationed at Long Beach, California. Robert Widmark, chief petty officer, arrived here on a 30-day leave, after which he will report for duty at San Francisco. He was spent some time in the southwest Pacific.
Kingsley, Iowa—Private C. Victor Taylor returned to Sherman, Texas after spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Taylor of Kingsley. He has three brothers in the armed forces, Private Lloyd Taylor, at the air base at St. Petersburg, Florida; Corporal Edward Taylor, Bainbridge, Georgia and Private Charles E. Taylor, the first draftee from Kingsley on March 11, 1941, who is now in New Guinea.
Granville, Iowa—Technician, 5th grade, Ambrose W. Forkenbrock was seriously wounded in action on May 5, in north Africa, a message received by his mother, Mrs. Frank Holles, revealed. Private Herbert Fockenbrock, another son, was seriously wounded in action in Africa last November, but has informed his mother that he is back in service.
Hinton, Iowa—Anna Vondrak of Hinton left Monday for the Waac officer training camp at Fort Des Moines. She is a graduate of Central High School, attended Briar Cliff College and Western Union College. She taught at James, Iowa this year. Miss Vondrak is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Vondrak of Hinton.
Akron, Iowa—Corporal Clayton D. Howard, son of Bertram D. Howard, has been graduated as a mechanic from the armored force school tank department at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Spirit Lake, Iowa—Corporal Raymond Majerus, son of Nickolas Majerus of Spirit Lake, has competed training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, as a skilled tank mechanic.
Sac City, Iowa—Verdeen H. Sindt of Camp Cooke, California, has been promoted to staff sergeant. He is the former resident of Cushing and has been in the army eight months. He is a brother of Mrs. Eldon Sharp, Sioux City.
Sheldon, Iowa—Raymond Henry of Sheldon has been promoted to private first class at Kearns field, Salk Lake City, Utah and now is stationed at a camp near Logan, Colorado. Cadet Wallace Henry, with the air force at Minneapolis, will spend a two-day furlough with his mother and brother here.

Aviation Student DeWayne Eyler has been transferred to Ouachita College, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he will take academic flight training. He formerly was stationed at Sheppard field, Texas. His brother Orville Eyler is in the Marine Corps at Honolulu. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Eyler, 615 W. Fourth Street.
First Class Seaman William Hill, son of Joseph Hill, 1218 Court Street, has returned to his station at New York City after spending a furlough with members of his family.
Private Harry Bert Thornton, son of Harry A. Thornton, 3151 Dearborn Street, has been assigned to a service unit of the army specialized training program at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. He will take a course which includes the study of engineering, physics and chemistry.
Second Class Petty Officer Oran D. Wells, his wife, Ida and their son, Terry are visiting in the homes of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.T. Wells, 3420 Fifth Avenue and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Dodge, 3316 Fifth Avenue. He is an instructor in the educational department at Navy Pier, Chicago.
Sergeant Robert A. Wood, 28, a son of C.H. Wood, 1410 W. 15th Street, was graduated recently from the army air forces flexible gunnery school in Kingman, Arizona. He entered the army at Fort Crook, Nebraska, August 27, 1942. He attended Central High School.
Richard O. Delashmutt, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Delashmutt, 1801 24th Street, has completed his studies as an aviation mechanic in an army air forces technical school, Amarillo field, Texas.
Auxiliary Elizabeth Buynak and Auxiliary Davina Settle of the Waac recruiting office here have been promoted to corporal and technician fifth grade, respectively.
George J. Buntley, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Buntley, 1001 S. Cornelia Street, has entered the signalman service school at the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho.
Donald D. Thorp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thorp, 4212 Grant Street, has been promoted to private first class as Keesler field, Mississippi.
