Corporal Ellis Mortrude, who has been stationed at Camp Crowder, Missouri, left Wednesday for the officers’ candidate school at Fort Washington, Maryland. His wife resides at 2315 Pierce Street.
Private Douglas Levering, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Levering, 2105 W. Second Street is one of three air force soldiers, on duty 24 hours a day, located at Matador, Texas, acting as firefighters of the range section of Childress A.A.F.B.S. on detached service. The big weapon of these soldier firefighters is a 2 ½-ton GI truck carrying a tank that holds 1,500 gallons of water and equipped with a motor driven pump and double hoses. Matador was chosen because it is centrally located among the school’s 16 targets laid out over an area of 5,400 square miles.
Clifton Syverson, seaman second class, has completed a course in a hospital corps school at Farragut, Idaho, and has been transferred to the naval hospital at San Diego. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Syverson, 426 Casselman Street.
Private Albert C. Swanson has informed his mother, Mrs. Hannah Swanson, 2516 Court Street of his arrival in England.,
Richard A. True, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis True, 713 ½ Wall Street, has been promoted to private first class in the Marine Corps at the destroyer base at San Diego. He enlisted on his 17th birthday anniversary, March 3, 1943.
Sergeant Paul M. Strong, stationed in the finance office at San Luis Obispo, California is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Strong, 3705 Peters Avenue.
Corporal Laverne Huss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Huss, 1912 ½ Geneva Street, has been transferred from Fitzsimons general hospital, Denver, to Fort Ord, California. His wife visited here with his parents and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Jimison, 1603 35th Street, before joining her husband in California.
Lieut. Sidney London, 3820 Jackson Street, is stationed at the infantry replacement training center at Camp Roberts, California.
Sergeant Fred Coleman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Coleman, 407 13th Street, is spending a furlough here with his wife and son. He is stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon.
Private Philip Sauer, son of Mrs. Grace Sauer, 2305 Pierce street, has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, preparatory to combat duty with an armored force unit.
Corporal Arthur (Sanky) Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur V. Paul, 4220 Central Street is home on furlough. He is stationed at Camp Elliott, San Diego, and is a graduate of Central High School.
Staff Sergeant J. Milford Ellison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Ellison, San Diego, formerly of Sioux City, has been stationed at the Sioux City air base for the last six weeks with the camouflage engineers. He is a graduate of Central High School and enlisted last September. Sergeant Ellison is a nephew of Mrs. Elsie Oxelson, 1222 Iowa Street and his wife resides in their home at San Diego.
Corporal Ralph K. Metcalf, son of Mrs. Julia Metcalf, 400 ½ W. Third Street, has been transferred from Camp Callahan, San Diego, to Camp Davis, North Carolina, for advanced antiaircraft training.
Raymond Gustavson, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Gustavson, 3500 W. Fifth Street, has been advanced to a staff sergeant’s rank at the Venice Air Base, California.
Lieut. George D. Seavey, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Seavey, 1414 West Street. Has completed training in flying the B-25 bomber at La Junta, Colorado army airfield. He attended Central High School and Ventura Junior College at Ventura, California. Before being appointed an aviation cadet he was enrolled in a C.P.T. aeronautics course.

Elmer L. Phillips, 2814 Home Street, left Tuesday for Fort Des Moine to be inducted into the navy. He was enlisted through the navy recruiting office here.
Private Robert Jorgensen of the engineer’s corps at Camp Grueber, Oklahoma, is spending a 10-day furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jorgensen, 2400 Terminal Drive. He entered the army last September.
Wayne Stevens, seaman second Class, who recently completed advanced training in a construction battalion at Camp Endicott, Rhode Island, is spending a nine-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Stevens, 1909 Pierce Street.
John Shaver, whose wife and daughter reside at 4512 Third Avenue, has been promoted to staff sergeant in the quartermaster corps at Camp Young, California.
Private Joseph D. Shoop, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Shoop, 3212 Fourth Avenue, is home on furlough. He is stationed in New Orleans.
Private Albert A. McCormick has returned to his station at Camp Haan, California, after a seven-day furlough spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton L. McCormick, 5202 Broken Kettle Road.
Byron (Bill) McManigal has been promoted to private first class at his new station in Africa. Private McManigal, in a letter to his wife, 213 10th Street, said he had eaten some meat packed in Sioux City.
Albert Goldstein, son of Mrs. Sarah Goldstein, 2115 Jackson Street, who has been attending the University of Minnesota, is now in naval officer’s training school in Minneapolis.
Lieut. Frank W. Oliver, son of Judge Ralph A. and Mrs. Oliver, 4118 Perry Way, received his wings at the completion of a parachute course in the Fort Benning, Georgia.
Floyd A. Pippett, seaman second class, has returned to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Pippett, 1102 S. Alice Street, having received a medical discharge from the navy. After contracting a tropical fever in the Pacific, he was hospitalized in Hawaii. He was at the Santa Cruz, California, Naval Hospital when his service discharge became effective June 26.
Private Walter (Mel) Abernathy, son of Mrs. Ellen Abernathy, 615 13th Street, has been on furlough, for the first time since going overseas in July, 1942, “somewhere in Australia” where he is stationed with the headquarters office of the air force. He was graduated from the technical air school at Fort Logan, Colorado, before going overseas.
Sergeant Edward E. Cussen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward James Cussen, 2006 W. Second Street, has received his wings as a gunner-technician-sergeant graduating from the Harlingen army airfield, Texas. Unless held over as an instructor, Sergeant Edward will depart immediately to join a fighting combat crew, the school announced.
Sergeant Harry H. Elsberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Elsberg, 623 Virginia Street has been promoted to the grade of staff sergeant and assigned to the duties of a physical training instructor at the Basic Training Center 8, Fresno, California.
Sergeant Stanley D. Essig, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.D. Essig, 2350 Nash Street, will report early this month to Sheppard field, Texas to begin basic training for aviation cadet. Unit called for cadet training, Sergeant Essig was a control tower operator at Paine field, Washington, where he has been stationed since enlisting into the army December 21, 1941, at Des Moines.
Corporal Clayton N. Kamm, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Kamm, 1024 S. Paxton Street, is spending a furlough in his home. He was graduated recently from a technical training school at Randolph field, Texas. He plans to return to a bombardier school at Midland, Texas, to be reassigned. His brother, Sergeant Stanley Kamm, is with the American forces in North Africa.
Stanley Shulkin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Shulkin, 301 Sparks Street, has been promoted to corporal. He is stationed at Peterson field, Colorado, where he is a link training instructor.
Lieut. Carl W. Nelson, a son of C.H. Nelson, 2600 McFaul Avenue, has been graduated from the Fort Crook ordnance automotive school.
Private Voss C. Sunclades has been visiting his father, Anthony Sunclades, 117 Westcott Street. He is stationed at an infantry camp at Barkeley, Texas. Another son of Mr. Sunclades is Albert, with the merchant marine in England.
Miss Charlotte Koch of Remsen, Iowa and Sioux City has finished her training as a Wac and has been visiting friends here.

Private First Class Orleane A. Jacobson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Jacobson, 2801 Center Street, has returned to Camp Swift, Texas, after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents.
Petty Officer First Class Jacob Sterling Jacobson, bother of Private First Class Jacobson, is spending a 30-day leave here before reporting to his new station at Bremerton, Washington. His wife will accompany him there to live. Officer Jacobson has been three times overseas, somewhere in the Pacific. He was graduated from Central High School, attended Iowa State College and has been in the navy a year and a half.
Private Edward Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl O. Anderson, 1206 19th Street, has been transferred from Fort Warren, Wyoming to Ohio University at Athens, Ohio. Private Anderson was a Journal carrier-salesman for four years.
Hewitt G. Septer, 2109 Geneva Street, stationed at Drew field, near Tampa, Florida, is spending a 15-day furlough in his home.
Lieut. Ernest L. Pacquette, a graduate of Central High School and Creighton University at Omaha now stationed at Cadet Center, San Antonio, Texas, has been visiting in the home of his sister, Mrs. Adolph Chaussee, 4405 W. 23d Street.
Rose S. DeBendetto, 515 12th Street, has been accepted for duty with the Waves, the navy recruiting officer here announced Wednesday. Miss DeBenedetto formerly was employed by a five-and-ten-cent store here. A former resident of New York City, she had lived here about a year.
Staff Sergeant James B. O’Connor, 37, stationed at Camp Swift, Texas, is here on a 10-day furlough visiting his wife, Helen, 4019 Ridge Avenue.
Aviation Cadet James E. Burns, a son of Mrs. Magdalene Burns, 507 Otoe Street has completed his preflight training at Washington University in St. Louis. He now will begin training as a pilot at Kelly field, Texas. Well known here as a football player, James was graduated from Central High School. He attended the University of South Dakota.
Edward J. Pierce has been advanced to a corporal’s rank at Dodge City army air field, Kansas. He is a member of a glider training group. Corporal Pierce’s wife, Margaret Leona, resides at 2825 Third Street.
Second Lieut. Vilmer K. Berger, Jr., 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. V.K. Berger, 26 Blackstone Avenue, has advanced to the rank of first lieutenant at Camp Pickett, Virginia. He is attached to a medical administrative corps.
Ervin H. Hinkley, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold R. Hinkley, 3419 Glenn Avenue, has been promoted to a Sergeant’s rank at the Sioux City Air Base. He is attached to a quartermaster company.
Lieut. Elizabeth Hule, army nurse corps, is home on five-day leave from her station at Schick General Hospital, Clinton, Iowa, where she is a surgery nurse. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Hule, 903 12th Street.
Private Warren G. Wall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wall, 1211 27th Street, is home on furlough. He is stationed in California.
Corporal Louis Mieras, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Mieras, 709 12th street, left Tuesday for his station at Camp Forrest, Tennessee, after spending a furlough with his parents.
Seaman Second Class Leland Wynn, son of Mrs. Martha Wynn, 2009 Hamilton Street, is stationed in Boston as a member of the coast guard.
Royce E. Miller, son of Mrs. R.E. Miller, 2935 Washington Avenue, has been promoted to private first class at Charleston, North Carolina. He is a former East High School pupil.
Leo Navin, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Navin, 210 ½ Cook Street, as arrived at Camp Perry, Virginia, to begin training in the Seabees. He is a graduate of Central High School.
Capt. Herbert E. Longren, son of Arvid Longren, 3210 13th Street, is attending an officer training school at the R.O.T.C. graduate camp, Fort Riley, Kansas.
Private Leo Dale Bliven, brother of Ed Bliven, 309 Alice Street, has entered a marine paratroop school at San Diego, California, after completing basic training. He is a graduate of East High School.
Aviation Cadets Francis J. Benton, Jr., 1409 W. Second Street; Robert J. Gessell, 2839 Nebraska Street; Nels A. Gustafson, 1111 21st Street; Robert J. Rasmussen, 1608 W. Fifth Street; Josiah A. Ringland, Jr., 2109 S. Palmetto Street; Alexander Shkerich, 1130 S. Wescott Street and Lawrence Slotsky, 712 34th Street, were included in the latest class to complete preflight training for pilots at the San Antonio, Texas aviation cadet center.

Rock Valley, Iowa – Mr. and Mrs. John Bajema of Rock Valley have two sons in the armed forces. Private First Class Otto J. Bajema has been in North Africa for a year with the engineering corps of the army and Willis F. Bajema left for Omaha recently to be inducted into the navy.
Inwood, Iowa—Staff Sergeant Merrill Boahnson, is stationed with the army air corps as a radio operator at Smyrma, Tenn. Private First Class Herbert Boahnson is a member of the infantry, and Corporal Van Boahnson is at Spring field, Missouri with the medical air force. All t here boys are sons of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Boahnson of Inwood.
Gregory, Iowa -- Private Albert J. Frank arrived at Fort Benjamin Harrison to begin basic training in finance. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Frank.
Denison, Iowa-- Cyrilla Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Seth Anderson of Denison, Iowa is taking a two-week training course at Washington, prior to departure for overseas Red Cross work. Miss Anderson will be staff assistant in the recreational unit of the Red Cross.

Private First Class Abe Turchen, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Turchen, 1211 11th Street, in a letter to his parents said he now is a patient in a south Pacific naval hospital. Private Turchen has been in the marines 13 months and overseas since January.
Private First Class Marvin Brodeen, marine paratrooper, son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Brodeen, 1118 S. Mulberry Street, has arrived safely overseas in the south Pacific. He entered the service in January.
First Lieut. Gale F. Hanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hanson, 3811 Peters Avenue, has finished training in the B-26 medium bomber flying school at Laughlin field, Del Rio, Texas and is stationed there as an instructor. Lieut. Hanson served as an instructor in the army air corps at Randolph field and Independence, Texas. Mrs. Hanson and their three children are with him.
Richard L. Mahan, who is with the military police in the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California, has been promoted to private first class, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Laura Mahan, 117 Sioux Street.
Private Jack Reinking, son of Dr. and Mrs. M.E. Reinking, 3406 Jennings Street, who was in training with the infantry at Camp Roberts, California, has been transferred it City College, New York.
Private William R. Gillespie, formerly of Sioux City, departed for maneuvers in Arizona after spending a 10-day furlough here and at Akron, Iowa, with his mother, Mrs. Dale Waterbury, who has three sons in service. Private Gillespie was a resident here four years until going into the army a year ago.
Private First Class George W. Smith, 34, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Smith, 5125 Morningside Avenue, has returned to Fort Winfield Scott, Texas, after spending eight days here. He has been in service 16 months and is with the coast artillery.
L.M. Reiser, who has been stationed in North Africa, has been promoted to the rank of captain, according to word received by his wife, who resides at 1713 Myrtle Street. Capt. Reiser is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Reiser, Terminal Building.
Corporal Arne Rostad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Rostad, 1517 24th Street, has been transferred from the Stewart Technical School in New York to the Lincoln supercharger specialist school, at Lynn, Mass.
Lieut. Jack H. Hatfield on July 1 at Yale University received his commission as second lieutenant in the armament school of the ground air force. He has been assigned to the air base at Ephrata, Washington and on his way there he will spend Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Hatfield, 7 Stewart Avenue. From New Haven he went to Quitman, Georgia for a brief visit with his wife and their infant son, Jack Jr.
Frank (Buck) Edwards, petty officer first class, and Ardel Petty, petty officer second class, both former police officers here, visited in Sioux City Friday on one-day leaves. They are stationed with the shore patrol with headquarters in Milwaukee.
Private Doug Stitt, son of Mrs. June Stitt, 5300 Fourth Avenue, has completed basic training at Sheppard field, Texas. Private Stitt graduated from East High School in June while at Sheppard field.
Leo Samsel, petty officer first class, of the coast guard, and his wife are spending his 15-day leave with their sons, James and Jerry, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Samsel, Sergeant Bluff.
Jim Easley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Easley, 2016 S. St. Aubin Street, was promoted to private first class soon after his return to Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, after a furlough home. He is attached to Headquarters Company of a medical battalion.
William K. Burns, son of Rev. Harry M. Burns, pastor of Whitfield Methodist Church, and Mrs. Burns, has entered St. Lawrence University at Canton, New York, in the navy V-12 college program to take a five-year premedic course preparatory to service in the navy medical corps. He was graduated from Central High School last June.
Private First Class Peter B. Asprey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Asprey, 2508 Jackson Street; Private First Class Arthur Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Miller, 1523 Summit Street and Private First Class Joseph W. Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Sanders, 312 Prairie Street, have been assigned to the specialized army training unit at Ohio State University, Columbus.
Private First Class John A. Haller, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Haller, 1223 Grandview Boulevard, has returned to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, after spending a furlough with his parents. He is a quartermaster’s clerk in a medical detachment.
Orrin A. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott J. Davis, route 1, has been promoted to first lieutenant. He is in the quartermaster corps, assigned to the air transport command at Camp Luna, Las Vegas, N.M.
Corporal Marvin Warren Brown, son of Mrs. E.D. Brown, 2116 S. Rustin Street, has been graduated from the air mechanics school at Keefler field, Mississippi, and is stationed for training at the Vultee Aircraft Consolidated plant at San Diego.
Richard Haley, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Haley, 1010 Fowler Street, is an air cadet stationed at Sheppard field, Texas.
Private Glenn E. Thompson, who has been attending cooks and bakers school in the quartermasters corps at Fort Riley, Kansas, has been transferred to Fort Francis E. Warren, Wyoming. Private Thompson’s wife lives at 1200 Court Street.
Private First Class Robert J. Viken, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Viken, 1001 S. Alice Street, has been promoted to corporal. He is stationed at the medical replacement center, Camp Barkeley, Texas.
Vachia (Mike) Bohan, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Eikeraski, 2802 Leech Avenue, has been assigned to the stewards mate training department in the maritime service training station, Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of Central High School.
Wayne Berens, seaman second class, who completed his boot training at Farragut, Idaho, naval training base, is spending a leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Berens, 2204 Geneva Street.
Private First Class Joseph P. Karpuk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Karpuk, 1217 S. Linn Street, has been promoted to corporal. He is attached to the chemical warfare service and is stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.
William M. Murray, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Murray, 2510 S. Palmetto Street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant at medical administrative corps officer candidate school graduation ceremonies at the medical replacement training center, Camp Barkeley, Texas.
Leo Bliven, brother of Edward Bliven, 309 S. Alice Street, marine paratrooper, has been promoted to private first class upon completion of basic training.
Private First Class James Cagley has been transferred from Fort Warren, Wyoming to the army commercial trades institute at Bloomington, Illinois, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Alice Cagley, Route 2.

Private Clarence D. Kerr, stationed with the army air corps at Dodge City, Kansas, is spending a furlough with his wife and seven children at 617 Iowa Street.
Robert J. Schneiders, 20, on duty in the south pacific, has been promoted to yeoman third class. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Schneiders, 1421 W. Palmer Avenue. His friend, Jack Newton, formerly of Sioux City, has been promoted to radio technician second class. They recently enjoyed a visit with Jim McLaughlin, now in the navy, a former employe of The Journal.
Private Jack H. Heitzman, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Heitzman, 1619 Fourth Street, has completed radio school at the marine base in San Diego and has been transferred to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.
Bruce H. Clifton, 923 27th Street, has arrived at San Antonio, Texas to begin preflight training in the army air corps. Others entering the school are Elmer L. Robert J. Cale, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Cale, Fairacres, Leeds, has completed advanced ground crew training at the army air forces school at the Vega Aircraft corporation plant at Burbank, California.
Frank Walish, whose wife resides at 111 Kansas Street, has been promoted to staff sergeant. He is stationed at an army base at Richmond, Virginia. He recently spent a convalescence furlough here.
Art P. Wingett, 18, son of Mrs. Katherine B. Wingett, 2315 Boies Street, has been promoted to fireman first class, following his graduation from a navy training school for diesel operators at Iowa State College.

Ocheyedan, Iowa-- Percy C. Faber, 23, fireman first class with the Seabees, has cabled his wife, Mrs. Percy C. Faber of Ocheyedan of his safe arrival in Australia.
Akron, Iowa—Claude Burrill, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Burrill, has left for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to be inducted into the army.
Akron, Iowa-- Sergeant Vincent Pollock, stationed at Camp Phillips, Kansas is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Max Pollock
Akron, Iowa – Private Russell Gillespie, Camp Rucker, Alabama, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Waterbury.
Sibley, Iowa—James W. Link, 21, sergeant technician fourth grade, with the signal corps, has been stationed in Iceland for two years. Link, who is with the aircraft warning division, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Link of Sibley. He is a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Link of Sioux City.
Sibley, Iowa—Relatives of Corporal Herman Dirks received word that he is in training school at Camp Davis, North Carolina.
Sibley, Iowa—Private Roy Willer, training at an army camp at Long Beach, California, is spending a furlough with his father, Charles Willer.
Sibley, Iowa—Dr. A.J. Kessler has left for Dallas, Texas to be inducted into the dental Corps of the army. His rank will be captain.
Sibley, Iowa-- Private Stanley Harris and bride are visiting relatives here. He is in training at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.
Perkins, Iowa-- Private Egbert Bonestroo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Egbert H. Bonestroo, has completed an intensive 45-day course in the maintenance and repair of Jeeps and has been graduated from the armored force school at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Perkins, Iowa—Alfred Reinhart is now stationed in Alaska. He was formerly stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he was in the ski trooper division. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. John Reinhart, of Moody County.
Sheldon, Iowa—Lieut. Rush Benson, stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, with the field artillery for officers training, arrived in Sheldon on Friday evening for a furlough with his mother and sister. His father, Maj. Raymond T. Benson is in New Orleans.
Rock Rapids, Iowa—Private James Kudrle of Rock Rapids, stationed at Camp Wolters, Texas, recently received a medal for sharpshooting. He has completed basic training and will be sent to another camp.

Sixth Street, has completed basic training at Sheppard field, Texas and has been transferred to an army radio school at Scott field, Illinois. Mrs. Abker and son Donnie will join Private Abker at Scott field in a short time.
Ensign Thomas V. Kelly, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Kelly, 1918 W. Fourth Street, was one of a class of 900 men commissioned in the United States Naval Reserve at Northwestern University.
Ernest David Dandurand, son of Mr. and Mrs Eugene Dandurand, 716 Court Street, has begun recruit training at the United States Naval Training Station at Farragut, Idaho.
John M. Sailors, private first class and son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sailors, 1016 Seventh Street, has been transferred from Louisiana State University to Texas A, and M. College. He is in the army specialized training program and is a graduate of Central High School. He formerly was a Journal carrier.
James J. Milner, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Milner, of Long Beach, California, formerly of Sioux City, is stationed at the army air forces basic training center, Kearns, Utah. Mr. Milner has been in the service since May.
Kenneth LeRoy Schuck son of Mrs. Alma E. Schuck, 1022 28th Street, recently was commissioned a second lieutenant in the engineer corps when he was graduated from the engineer officer’s candidate school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Lieut. Schuck attended Iowa State College, Ames, and enlisted in February 1943. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Hogan.
Aviation Cadet Henry W. Roberts, son of Mrs. Anna M. Roberts, Sydney Apartments, has arrived for training at the air forces basic flying school at Cochran army airfield, Macon, Georgia.
Lieut. W. G. Stickels, his wife and son Billy left Monday for Ellington field, Texas, after spending 10 days with Mrs Stickel’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Roberts, and Lieut. Stickel’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Stickels, 2610 Virginia Street. Mr. and Mrs. Stickels accompanied Lieut. and Mrs. Stickels as far as Omaha. Before his recent transfer, Lieut. Stickels was stationed at San Marcos, Texas.
Private Robert E. Follis is stationed in England and his brother, Lawrence C. Follis, petty officer second class has been returned to Jacksonville, Florida from Miami, where he spent a month recovering from an appendectomy. Robert and Lawrence are sons f Mr. and Mrs. E, P. He was transferred due to an eye weakness, A brother, Capt. J.M. Bolks, is in the army dental corps.

Hartley, Iowa-- Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hirt of Hartley received word this week that their son, Dale W. Hirt, has been promoted to the rank of captain at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Storm Lake, Iowa-- Andy Kacmarynski, wounded in the battle on Attu, is spending a 30-day convalescent furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Kacmarynski. A member of an amphibious infantry unit, he was with the first Wave of American troops that swarmed ashore under cover of a thick fog on April 11.

Estherville, Iowa—Private Don R. Mauck, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Mauck, has been transferred from Camp Roberts, California, to New York for special training. Another son of the Mauck family, Private First Class Max Mauck recently discharged from a hospital at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he had been for a broken ankle, has been an instructor in calisthenics. He is expected home on furlough.

Sheldon, Iowa – Kenneth DeWaay is stationed at San Diego, California, with the naval medical corps and will study there six weeks. He recently completed his boot training at Farragut, Idaho.
Akron, Iowa—Donald W. Lucken, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Henry Lucken, was recently graduated from the service school for machinists mates at the naval training station, at Great Lakes, Illinois, with the rating of fireman first class.

Greenville, Iowa – A letter written by Donald G. Veitch from a German prison camp March 21 has just been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Veitch of Greenville. It is the first communication from him since he was taken prisoner in Tunisia February 17.
Hartley, Iowa – Leonard E. Ewoldt, 29, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Ewoldt of Hartley, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander in the navy. Recently he was awarded the navy cross for courageous action against the enemy at Tugali Harbor.
Battle Creek, Iowa – Word has been received by his parents, that Private Keith Vance Kellow, has been assigned to the college of William and Mary Williamsburg, Virginia, for continuance of his premedical work under auspices of the A.S.T.P. Keith is the youngest son of Rev. and Mrs. Kellow, formerly of South Sioux City, Nebraska.
Hosper, Iowa – Sergeant Henry DeVries left on his return to Mather field, Sacramento, California, after spending a furlough with his mother, Mrs. Jennie DeVries.

Spencer, Iowa – Marion F. Mason, son of Mrs. I.E. Mason of Spencer, was a member of a crew of one of three Catalina flying boats which rescued 50 wounded marines off New Georgia Island, according to a delayed press report from Guadalcanal.
James, Iowa – Lieut. Paul F. Paulsen is training at the Dyersburg, Tenn., air base as a crew member of a Flying Fortress.
Sanborn, Iowa – Joe Enenbach, flight radio officer, army transport, from Edmonton, Canada, is spending a furlough here with his mother, Mrs. Henry Enenbach.

Sheldon, Iowa – Air Cadet James Kuiper, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kuiper of Sheldon, is stationed at Lancaster, California, with the army air force. He received his primary flight training at the Sheldon junior college airport.
Albert City, Iowa – Corporal Henry H. Franzmeire, son of William Franzmeire of this city, has completed of the arms qualifications courses at Paine field, Everett, Washington.
Washta, Iowa – Private First Class Bernard Bennett, son of Wilbur Bennett of Washta has recently been awarded the purple heart medal. He narrowly escaped death under the wreckage of a Spitfire plane which was shot down in a dog fight with axis craft and landed near a group of American soldiers. He escaped with minor injuries.
Washta, Iowa – Private First Class Walter Deming, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Deming of Sioux City, former Washta residents, has been home on furlough. He is stationed at a marine base, San Diego, California.
Bronson, Iowa – Delbert (Red) Langstaff, seaman second class, is spending a 10-day furlough visiting his parents and sister, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Langstaff and Clara of Bronson. He is stationed at the naval training station, Sampson, New York.

Estherville, Iowa – Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. Jones received word from the war department that the body of James S. Cline, drowned at Camp Young, California, has been recovered but cannot be sent here for burial. It will be interred in Sawtelle National Cemetery in California.
Pisgah, Iowa – Corporal William L. Hardt, is now a member of a paratrooper battalion stationed at Camp McCall, North Carolina.
Arnolds, Park, Iowa - Lieut. Archie Barriage, now home on a 30-day furlough, is the first local man to return from the Africa War Theater. He was wounded in action and subsequently sent home for hospitalization. He has been decorated with the Purple Heart for his part in the battle.
Lawton, Iowa – Auxiliary Lucille M. Cornelia of Lawton has completed training in the bakers’ and cooks school of the first women’s auxiliary corps training center at Fort Des Moines.
Ute, Iowa -- Robert F. Sharp, son of Dr. and Mrs. F.S. Sharp, has received orders to report Monday at Notre Dame University, where he will attend midshipmen school. Mr. Sharp enlisted in September 1942, in the naval reserves and is a member of the naval V-7 program. He attended the University of Iowa a year and a half and was a June graduate of Morningside College. A brother, Lieut. Richard St. Clair Sharp, is a marine aviator stationed at Corpus Christi, Texas.
Ute, Iowa – James Flynn, who has been in the army since September and stationed at Lemoore, California, has been released and transferred to the army reserve. He will report at Los Angeles, where he will be employed in an airplane factory.
Ute, Iowa – Lyle Bramson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bramson is with the Seabees somewhere in the Pacific.
Ute, Iowa – Lieut. Wayne E. Downing, a graduate of East High in Sioux City and grandson of Mrs. C.P. Downing of Ute, has received his wings at Moore field, Texas, last July and has since been in instructor ar various camps in the southwestern states.
Storm Lake, Iowa – Don Peterson, seaman second class, has completed his boot training at Farragut, Idaho and is spending a 15 day leave here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Peterson.
Storm Lake, Iowa – Lieut. Wendell Pendleton and Second Lieut. Frances Pendleton are on leave at the parental home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pendleton. Both are marine corps aviators.
