Sheldon, Iowa – Auxiliary Mary Simpa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Simpa, has become a sergeant at the second Waac training center at Daytonna Beach, Florida. The Simpas also have two sons in the service, Gary, who is taking naval training at Miami, Florida and John, stationed at a naval school at Portland, Me., where he is a member of a 26-piece band.

Hornick, Iowa – Private Keith R. Sluyter. Son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Sluyter, has been graduated from a course of teletyping at Chanute field, Rantoul, Ill. He has been sent to Olmstead field, Middleton, Pa., to take a course in weather observation.

Rock Valley, Iowa – Catherine I Flynn of the Waacs has been promoted to technician corporal at Fort Custer, Michigan. She is a telephone switchboard operator. 

Denison, Iowa – Miss Isabel Saly, department store employee here, has passed the entrance examination for the Waves and is awaiting her call to service.

Sheldon, Iowa—Seaman Second Class Richard Hof at Raton Beach, Florida with the coast guard, is spending a 10-day leave here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hof. Frederick J. Wirth of Sheldon has completed 12 weeks “boot” training at the Great Lakes naval training station and is home on leave. He is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Wirth, Frederick.

Sheldon, Iowa—Private Thomas DeGroot is home on furlough visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard DeGroot. He is stationed at Milleville, N.J., at an army air base.

Onawa, Iowa – Clara E. Kuehler of Onawa has enlisted in the Waves in Des Moines. Miss Kuehler will report for active duty soon.

Sioux Rapids, Iowa – Ralph Campbell, for the last year and a half superintendent of the Galva, Iowa school, has been commissioned a lieutenant in the navy and will leave at once for the indoctrination at Dartmouth college. Before going to Galva he taught at Wesley, Iowa.

Correctionville, Iowa – Private John Butler, stationed at the Lincoln air base, is spending a seven-day furlough with his wife and son, Jackie, in the home of her mother, Mrs. John Davidson, at Correctionville and in the hoe of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Paul Ludwig of Anthon.

Smithland, Iowa – Warrant Officer Gordon B. Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles G. Nelson, Smithland, has arrived at Amarillo army air field, Texas and has been assigned to duty with the technical training command school. He was previously stationed at Midland, Texas.

Correctionville, Iowa-- Miss Kathleen Kaye Addison of Battle Creek, Michigan, formerly of the Anthon and Correctionville community, was inducted into the Waacs and will visit her mother here before leaving for Florida to begin training. She finished high school at Anthon in 1940 and was cheer leader and a member of the girls glee club. She has been employed at Battle Creek since October 1941.

Lloyd E. Booth, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Booth, 4049 Harrison Street, is receiving his basic army training at Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Corporal Marion B. Gustine and Mrs. Gustine have arrived from Camp Walters, Texas, to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. Estergaard, 2135 McKinley Street.

Melvin, Iowa – Warren F. Schroeder, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroeder, route 1, Melvin, is enrolled in the navy school for electricians at Iowa State College, Ames.

Holstein, Iowa – William Edward Jackes, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. William Jackes, recently was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army upon graduation from the officer candidate course in the infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia. He entered the army January 2, 1942 and served with the quartermaster air force complimentary military police in Hawaii as a corporal.

Sheldon, Iowa – Charles E. Myers of Sheldon has been commissioned a second lieutenant on completion of the officer’s candidate course at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Sheldon, Iowa – Robert Jory, graduate of the Sheldon Junior College, has been graduated at Boca Raton field, Florida, as a corporal from the army radio school.

Sheldon, Iowa – Sergeant Earl Smith of Camp Clairborne, Louisiana, and his wife are visiting in the Albert Smith home here.

Galva, Iowa – Private LaVeene L. Larsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Larsen, has been transferred from Jefferson barracks, Missouri, to Superior, Wisconsin, where he is attending Superior State Teachers College for his preflight training in the army air corps.

Bronson, Iowa, -- Private Orville Mizer, son of Elmer Mizer, has arrived at the quartermaster replacement training center at Fort Warren, Wyoming.

Smithland, Iowa – Robert N. Lee, son of S.B. Lee, has been commissioned second lieutenant on completion of the officer candidate course at the infantry school at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Castana, Iowa – Vinton Thomson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Thomson, has been commissioned second lieutenant. He recently completed an officer candidate course at Fort Benning, George.

To Join Husbands in Air Service
Mrs. Warren Silzer, 3419 Douglas Street and Mrs. Robert Hine, 919 34th Street, departed Sunday for San Antonio where they will join their husbands, who are in training in the army air force.

With her son Bobby, Mrs. Harry N. Workhoven, 3716 Fifth Avenue, has departed for Denver to live and to join Lieut. Workhoven, stationed at Buckley field, Colorado.

LeRoy D. Robbins, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E Robbins, 2825 Dupont Street, who has been stationed with the army in the Hawaiian Island since March 1942, has been promoted to the rank of motor supply sergeant. He has been in the service since October, 1941.

Private James L. Tuton, son of Mr. and Mrs Vern Tuton, 621 Iowa Street, recently inducted into the army, is taking basic training in the armored infantry regiment at North Camp Polk, Louisiana. Before entering the service, he attended Central High School.

Roy Elwin Crowder, 517 38th Street, has been graduated from the basic flying school at Shaw field, Sumter, Sioux City and has been transferred to the advanced aviation school in Georgia.

Wayne E. Colton, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Colton, 508 Market Street, who is stationed at an army air force technical training command station at Fresno, California has been promoted from corporal to sergeant.

Corporal Sherman G. Weigel, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Weigel, Salix, Iowa, has been graduated from the parent radio school at the air forces technical training command at Scott field, Illinois

Technical Corporal Jack M. Brell of Shephard field, Texas, and his wife have arrived for a visit with her parents, Mr and Mrs. L. V. Carter, 3017 Euclid Street. They also will visit his parents at Sac City, Iowa before returning, Corporal Brell is with the quartermasters corps.

Merris Richard Warfield and Roy Crossland Warfield, sons of Mrs. R. M. Warfield, Jr. 2306 Douglas Street, have been promoted according to word received by their mother. Lieut. M. R. Warfield, a flying instructor at Pampa, Texas, has been advanced to captain in the aviation corps of the army, and Lieut. (j.g.) R. C. Warfield, also an aviation instructor based at Pensacola, Florida has been promoted to lieutenant senior grade in the navy. Their father, Roy M. Warfield, a veteran flier of the First World War, is a captain in the army air corps stationed at Glendale, California.

Corporal Charles W. Wilton has returned to Avon Park, Florida, after spending a 15-day furlough with his wife at 606 S. Howard Street, and with his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Wilton, 12 W. Second Street.

Richard Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Martin, 103 Bluff Street, has been promoted from private to corporal. Corporal Martin, who has been in the service since February 3, 1943, is stationed at Camp Hood, Texas.

Private Earl M. Faber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Faber, 117 S. Cornelia Street, is home on a 10-day furlough from Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, where he is a member of the medical corps. His wife resides with his sister, Mrs. Leslie Neill, 115 S. Cornelia Street.

Private Max J. Frazier, son of Mr. and Mrs H. I. Frazier, 2726 Home Street, is stationed with the coast artillery at Camp Haan, California.

Kenneth A. Lothrop has been promoted from private to corporal technician in the mail department of an infantry unit at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Adah Lothrop, 114 Midvale Avenue.

Aviation Cadet Floyd Corwin Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Morris, 1706 Fall Avenue, has completed primary flight training at Harris field, Cape Girardeau, Missouri and will be transferred to a basic flying school.

Private First Class Joseph A. Wiatt is home on a 30-day furlough visiting his wife, the former Dolores Harvey, 315 11th Street. He has been stationed in the Panama Canal Zone 10 months. Previous to entering the army a year ago, Private Wiatt was a poultry technician.

Seaman Second Class Louis Peter Casillas, a son of Edward Casillas, 2718 Peters Avenue, has sent greetings from a naval air station in the Hawaiian area.

Aviation Cadet Robert R. Peterson, son of Mrs. Marguerite Peterson, formerly of Sioux City and now of Los Angeles, California is under-going pilot training at Santa Ana, California. Cadet Peterson attended Joy School here and is a 1939 graduate of East High School. He entered the service last September.

Seaman First Class Kenneth Walker is stationed in New Jersey after training at the Great Lakes Station and a brother, Private Worth Walker is stationed “somewhere in Africa.” Their mother is Mrs. Charles P. Stevens of Leeds and a sister is Mrs. Violet Danala, 2412 ½ Correctionville Road.

Private First Class Melvin J. Speichinger, 1221 Summit Street, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete A. Speichinger, 2925 Leech Avenue, Stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, has been advanced to Corporal.

William A. Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Thompson, 215 13th Street, is taking basic naval training at Farragut, Idaho.

Ludwig C. DeKok has completed a 16-week course at the naval training school at Morehead, Kentucky where he received a rating as electrician’s mate third class and will be stationed at Norfolk, Virginia according to word received by his wife, who resides at 305 12th Street.

Sloan, Iowa -- Second Class Seaman Richard Hubert has returned to the Great Lakes naval station after visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hubert.

Hornick, Iowa—Private Clifford A. Golden, son of Mrs. Eva Golden, has been graduated at Fort Knox, Kentucky, as a radio operator.

Kingsley, Iowa –Relatives and friends will gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Keller, near here, Sunday to honor their son, Corporal Wesley J. (Lee) Keller, who is on furlough. He will return to his station at Camp Hale, Colorado, Monday. Corporal Keller entered the army June 11, 1942. 

Milford, Iowa – Dr. and Mrs. Floyd Place entertained their son, Second Lieut. Leon Place, over the weekend. He had come from his base in Texas as a passenger on a training flight for another crew. The plane arrived at its destination Saturday and returned to Texas early Sunday morning. It was Lieut. Place’s first visit home since entering the air corps in June. 

Denison, Iowa—W.G. Hallett, owner of a shoe store here, enlisted in the navy as seaman first class. Mrs. Hallett will continue with the business. Jack Carey, state highway commission employee, left here this week for Des Moines where he reported for duty with the Seabees of the navy.

Odebolt, Iowa--  Glenn R. Pederson, who has been in charge of the Sac and Ida County National Farm Loan Association office here the last two years, is leaving soon for army induction. Harry Adams of Sioux City will succeed Mr. Pedersen. 

Sheldon, Iowa – Staff Sergeant Guy Heijn of Sheldon, stationed with American troops in the Aleutian Islands, is home on furlough visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Heijn. This is Sergeant Heijn’s first leave in 18 months. He was formerly a member of the Sheldon National Guard Unit.

Private Clare R. Mueller of the United States Marines is stationed at a naval operating base in Auckland, New Zealand, according to word received by his fiancee, Miss Betty Abker, 1637 W. Sixth Street. Private Mueller is a son of Mrs. Ruth Mueller, 2315 Hamilton Street.

Corporal Norman H. Agathon, former Journal reporter, who for the last eight months has been editor of Sky Watch, Fort Eustis newspaper; has been transferred to the 20th armored division at Camp Campbell, Kentucky.

Jack M. Bard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abel E. Bard, former Sioux Cityans' who now lives in Omaha, is stationed with the air corps at Kearn’s field, Utah, where he is taking specialist’s training as a surgeon’s assistant.

Lieut. Lester Ivan Nelson, 3911 Fourth Street, a naval reserve officer, is scheduled to complete on April 12 a 60-day naval indoctrination course at the United States Naval Training School, Tucson, Arizona.

Warren D. Butler, whose wife lives at 1715 West Street, has been promoted to corporal in the army at Camp Wolters, Texas.

Gerald Francis Hutmacher, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Hutmacher, 1712 W. First Street has reported for training at the Farragut, Idaho, naval training station.

Frank Paul Yellman, 1217 Seventh Street has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the army at the field artillery officer candidate school, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He has been assigned to duty there.

Midshipman Albert Zeligson, who is stationed in the merchant marine academy at Great Neck, L. I., is spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Zeligson, 613 Center Street.

Dan Kaplan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kaplan, 3737 Jackson Street, has been promoted to corporal at Camp Childress, Texas. He is a weather observer.

Private Earle H. Frazier has been transferred from the Miami, Florida air base to Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where he will attend clerical school, according to word received by his wife, who lives at 711 W. Second Street.

Merlin Richards, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Richards, 1721 S. Newton Street, who is at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, has been awarded a commission. He was a printer third class. His wife is with him at the station, doing clerical work. A brother, Sergeant Garth N. Richards, has been transferred from Denver, Colorado to Davis Monthan field, Tucson, Arizona.

Lieut. Michael Skolovsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Skolovsky, 415 George Street, arrived Tuesday from Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi, for a furlough with his parents.

Private William C. Troll, son of Mrs. Alamie Troll of Walnut, Iowa, has arrived overseas, according to a letter received by his wife, who resides at 1203 Pierce Street.

Private Robert C. Campbell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert V. Campbell, 4035 Monroe Street, is visiting here on a 15-day furlough from Lowry field, Denver.

Corporal James Latelle, formerly of Sioux City, is a guest in the home of Florence De Laughter, 3126 Nash Street. Corporal Latelle is stationed at Camp Tison, Tennessee.

Second Lieut. Frank Yellman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Yellman, 1212 Seventh Street, is home on furlough from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he has been in training with the field artillery. On graduation just before coming here, his rank in service was advanced to second lieutenant. Before going into the service on July 14, 1942, Yellman was employed in The Sioux City Journal circulation department.

Mapleton, Iowa—Naval Aviation Cadet Raymond John Koenigs, 19, son of Mrs. John I. Koenigs, Mapleton, Iowa, has been transferred from Ottumwa, Iowa to naval air station, Corpus Christi, Texas after completion of the primary flight training course.

Sheldon, Iowa—Private Donald Brower, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerard J. Brower near here, is receiving his basic training in the quartermaster’s corps at Fort Warren, Wyo.

Sheldon, Iowa – Dr. and Mrs. W. S. Balkema of Sheldon have received a letter from their son, Donald, saying that he is taking field hospital training at an island in the Pacific and when completed will be sent into action with the naval dental corps. He has just been promoted from lieutenant junior grade to lieutenant senior grade.

Salix, Iowa – For the next 16 weeks, Francis G. Hubert, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.F. Hubert, Salix, will be a student in the navy’s school for machinist’s mates at the Great Lakes naval training station.

William John Bower, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Bower, Fairacres, Leeds, has begun training at the naval training station, Farragut, Idaho.

Ben Corey, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Corey, 3209 Nebraska Street, has been promoted from private to corporal and transferred from St. Petersburg, Florida to Hammer field, California.

Francis Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Wilson, formerly of Sioux City and at present living in Huntington Park, California joined the navy April 3. He is stationed at San Diego, California.

George Horner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Horner, 1313 ½ Jones Street, has completed basic training at Fort Smith, Arkansas and is taking technical training in schools in Detroit, Flint, Michigan and Cleveland.

Ronald Kenneth Stone, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Stone, 428 W. First Street is attending the naval training school for radiomen at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

Guy M. Huffman, son of Mrs. Milo Hoffman, 1114 ½ W. Second Street is stationed at Camp Hood, Texas, where he is stationed to a tank destroyer division. Harold Huffman, another son is with American forces in Tunisia.

Jean L. Laffoon, pharmacist’s mate third class, who has been stationed at the naval hospital, Great Lakes, Illinois for four months, has been transferred to the naval medical school at Bethesda, Maryland near Washington, D.C. for eight weeks of special training concerning tropical diseases. From there he will be sent to the tropics with a medical unit. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Laffoon, 1401 W. Third Street.

Private Calvin G. Nelson, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin G. Nelson, 3606 Fifth Street, is stationed with a tank destroyer unit at Camp Hood, Texas.

Sergeant Kenneth G. Laverty, member of an antisubmarine unit, has arrived safely in Africa, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. J. B. Waggmer, 1116 W. 15th Street. She also received word that her brother, Sergeant George Miller, Ida Grove, Iowa has arrived overseas. Mrs. Waggmer’s nephew, Lieut. Nate Bond of Ida Grove has been in Australia for more than a year.

Harold A. C. Asmussen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Asmussen, 3915 Orleans Avenue, has been promoted to the grade of corporal at the army air force bombardier school, Midland, Texas.

Charles Russell Landon, son of Mrs. Mabel Landon, 1716 Nebraska Street, has been reported for training at the naval training station, Farragut, Idaho.

Aviation Machinist Mate Third Class Vernon D. Gill, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gill, 3100 Euclid Avenue, recently graduated from the naval training station at the navy pier, Chicago, Illinois.

Corporal William G. Padmore of Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Arkansas, is spending a few days furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Padmore, 715 28th Street.

Staff Sergeant William H. Gill, recently graduated from a chemical school, is spending a short furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs., Joe Gill, 2856 Dodge Street. He is to report next week at Campo Atterbury, Indiana.

Franklin Williams, machinist’s mate second class, is on leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Williams, 212 W 16th Street. Machinist Williams, who has been in the navy for seven months saw action in North Atlantic waters. He is a Central High School graduate.

Private First Class Arthur Syverson is training at the Teletype Mechanics School at Chanute Field, Illinois, where he is a member of the air corps. Clifton Syverson is taking boot training at Camp Hill, Farragut, Idaho. Both are sons of Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Syverson, 426 Casselman Street.

Louis A. Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Jones, Allen, Nebraska has been promoted to the rank of corporal. He is stationed at Camp Haan, California and his wife and baby reside at 1802 Court Street.

Private First Class Frank A Conway, attached to the air corps at Buckley Field, Colorado, spent a three-day furlough in the home of his mother, Mrs. Clair J. Conway, 1745 California Avenue.

Clyde L. Ballard, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L Ballard, 1215 Nebraska Street, is visiting his parents and wife after completing first training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. On his return to Great Lakes he expects to specialize in radio work.

Paul E. Brennan, seaman first Class, United States Coast Guard Reserve, is spending a 10-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Frank G. Brennan and sister, 1622 Summit Street. He came from New Orleans, La. Seaman Brennan is a former Journal reporter.

Corporal Owen Rothman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rothman, 3221 Washington Avenue, recently returned to Fort George Meade, Maryland, after spending a five day furlough with his wife and baby daughter, Cathy Jo, born March 31.

Burton L. Rocky, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.I. Rocky, 1614 W. Sixth Street, is stationed at the army air force basic training center, Kearns, Utah.

Corporal Wayne Brouillette, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Brouillette, 500 22d Street is spending a 15-day furlough from the army air base at Eagle Pass, Texas, where he is stationed. Corporal Brouillette enlisted in the army last October and is attached to an ordnance section.

Vernon C. Miller, aviation machinist mate third class, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Miller, 3201 Glenn Avenue, is stationed at the naval air station, Ottumwa, Iowa. His wife and two children are there visiting him.

Sergeant Raymond Gustavson, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Gustavson, 3500 w. Fifth Street, is spending a furlough with his parents. He is stationed at MacDill Field, Tampa, Florida.

Cushing, Iowa – Robert Ohme, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer H. Ohme here, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army April 6 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Accompanied by his bride, the former Miss Florence Walker of Sidney, Iowa, he is on leave at the home of his parents. He will be stationed at Camp Howze, Texas.

Washta, Iowa -- Corporal Dwight Fisher is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Fisher. He is stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon. A brother, William Fisher, will leave soon for induction.

Anthon, Iowa – Private First Class, John Franklin Taylor, son of Mrs. Minnie Taylor, has recently been graduated from gunnery school at Laredo arm air field at Laredo, Texas. He is now stationed at Buckley field, Denver, Colorado, for further training for radio aerial gunnery in the army air forces.

Sheldon, Iowa – Wayne Smith of Sheldon who has been stationed with the army at Miami, Florida, is home on a short furlough on his way to the army technical school at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he is being transferred. He is visiting his wife and his mother, Mrs. Anna Smith, both of Sheldon.

Doon, Iowa -- Mrs. Elizabeth Mann received a telegram from the navy department informing her that her son, Jake A. Mann is missing in action, Jake, 22, joined the navy last July and was a third class gunner’s mate. He was born and raised here.

Spencer, Iowa – Nine young women of this area have made application to join the Waves, following Miss Rella Sanden’s three-day visit to Spencer for recruiting. Twenty-five young women attended a dinner at the Tangeny hotel and heard Miss Sanden explain the qualification, training and work of the Waves and Spars.

Spencer, Iowa – Spencer friends have learned that G.A. (Al) Beardshear, pre-glider school instructor, was killed recently in a plane crash at Vernon, Texas. He was the first instructor to come to Spencer when the pre-glider school was located here last summer, and he stayed the entire six months of the school. No details of the fatal crash are known except that a fellow instructor has written, “He could have avoided death but crashed in a successful attempt to save the life of his student.” The body was taken to the home of his parents at Spearfish, South Dakota for funeral services and burial.

Storm Lake, Iowa – Jim Thomson, reported seriously wounded while operating with the Royal Canadian air force in England, suffered “multiple wounds in his right shoulder and left ankle” according to further word received by his mother, Mrs. Nan Thomson. Thomson, now in the hospital in England, had been piloting a heavy bomber on sweeps over Nazi occupied territory. His brother, Dick, left here this week with a Buena Vista County contingent bound for army service.

Mapleton, Iowa – Word has been received here that Kenneth S. Brechler has been transferred from Camp Andover, Massachusetts, with a military police battalion to New York City. He also received a promotion to corporal. Brechler was athletic coach at Mapleton High School before entering civil service at Ellis Island, more than a year ago. He was inducted into the army from Monona County recently.

Aurelia, Iowa --- Duane Harry Otten, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Otten, has arrived at Farragut, Idaho, to begin his naval schooling.

Moville, Iowa -- Clarence Frederick Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Peterson, route 2, Moville, is a naval recruit at Farragut, Idaho.

Sheldon, Iowa -- A class of 35 war training student pilots has reported at the Sheldon airport to begin an eight-week course of instruction.

Sheldon, Iowa – Private William Hoekstra, stationed at Kimball, South Dakota, at the bombing and gunnery range of the army air corps, returns this week after spending a 15-day furlough in the home of his mother, Mrs. R.J. Hoekstra.

Sheldon, Iowa – Bob Jenkins of Sheldon is stationed in the quartermasters corps at Will Rogers field, Oklahoma.

Harold W. Moore, son of Mrs. Dorothy Moore, 4336 Springfield Street, is taking basic training in an armored infantry regiment at North Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Marcel M. Foix, son of Mrs. A. Foix, 2124 W. Fourth Street, has been promoted to technician fourth grade in an armored battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Aviation Cadet William Gerald McKee, son of Mr. and Mrs. William G. McGee, 2529 Rebecca Street, is a member of a class to be graduated soon from the army air force advanced flying school at Yuma, Arizona.

Leonard Claude, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Claude, 2221 Boies Street, has been promoted to private, first class on assignment to the technical school of the army air force at the Colorado College of Education at Greeley, Colorado. Private Claude is a graduate of Central High School and a former employee of the Toy National Bank.

Emil C. Claussen, Jr., 2013 W. Palmer Avenue, has completed a course of studies as an aviation mechanic in the army air forces technical training school at the Amarillo army air field, Amarillo, Texas.

Vincent Lynn McMahon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger McMahon, 1921 Riverside Boulevard, was advanced to third class petty officer on graduation from the trade school for aviation machinist’s mates at Navy pier, Illinois.

Winfield S. Flanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Flanders, 2019 S. St. Aubin Street, will attend the navy school for gunners mate at Great Lakes Station, Illinois, for the next 16 weeks.

Private LeRoy Grothaus, son of Mrs. R. H. Elliott, 2610 W. Fourth Street, is taking basic training at Camp Robinson, Arkansas. He is in the medical corps.

Gale F. Hanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hanson, 3811 Peters Avenue, has been promoted to first lieutenant at the army air basic flying school near Independence, Kansas. He received his wings and commission as a service pilot at Randolph field September 3, 1942, and reported at Independence as a flying instructor in February this year. His wife, Mrs. Jaunita C. Hanson, and their three children are residing in Independence.

James H. Alexander, son of Mrs. Pearl Alexander, 1619 W. Fifth Street, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. Lieut. Alexander, who recently was awarded the air medal for his rescue of the crew of a Flying Fortress forced down in the Pacific, also has been made assistant engineering officer of his squadron. He is stationed at San Diego, California.

Private Loren J. Husted, stationed at Middle River, Maryland has been promoted to corporal.

Leonard J. Warren, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Warren, 1310 Jackson Street, has returned to Camp Young, California after spending a furlough here. He has been promoted to sergeant.

Private Charles Gilson, who has been stationed at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, is spending a week’s furlough here with his wife at 1505 W. 29th Street.

Private Jim Brodie of the Marine Corps will return to Memphis, Tennessee, after a five-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Brodie, 4436 Military Road.

Keith McWilliams, who recently returned to duty with an ordnance company at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, after spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. McWilliams, 1616 W. 18th Street, has been promoted to corporal.

Robert P. Samuelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. R J. Samuelson, 2404 Geneva Street, was recently promoted to fireman first class after completing a course in diesel engine training at the naval training school, Richmond, Virginia. He is spending a 10-day leave with his parents before reporting for duty on the east coast.

Corporal Floyd Mosier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mosier, 3900 Lakeport Road, is on a 14-day furlough visiting at the home of his parents. He is stationed at Tampa, Florida, attached to the army air corps. Corporal Mosier was inducted last November.

Don E. Harris, seaman second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Harris, 2101 Boies Street, has returned to the Great Lakes for advanced training after spending a nine-day leave with his parents.

Henry D. Faller, son of Mrs. Katherine Faller, 2115 S. Henry Street, has been promoted to the rank of private first class and assigned to the army air forces technical training command at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is training as a radio operator-mechanic.

Richard W. Tincher, private first class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Tincher of Correctionville, Iowa has been graduated from the armament school, Lowry field, Colorado.

Private Karroll M. Carson has arrived at the army air forces technical training command post at Scott field, Illinois, where he will receive a course in radio operating and mechanics. His wife resides at 1923 S. Helen Street.

Private George V. Boyle, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Boyle, 1218 W. 14th Street, who left here recently for military service, is stationed at Camp Haan, California.

Staff Sergeant Merlin R. Rasmussen, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Rasmussen, 214 S. Collins Street, has been promoted to first sergeant in the coast artillery at San Diego.

Private Robert N. Sensanbaugh, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Sensanbaugh, 215 George Street, is in his second week of basic training at Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Private Arthur Rion has informed his sister, Mrs. Arland Anderson of his safe arrival overseas in January. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1942.

Private Arland Anderson, U.S. Marines, is stationed at Memphis, Tennessee, where he is taking a five-month course as an aviation mechanic. He joined the Marines in December, 1942. His wife and 2-month-old son are living at 418 Main Street.

Harley Babbitz, son of Mrs. B. Babbitz, Grandview Apartments, is taking basic training in the army signal corps at Camp Crowder, Missouri.

Private Harold Johnson returned to Kelly field, Texas, after spending a short leave here. Private W. E. Young Jr, returned to Matagora Island, Gulf of Mexico, after a leave spent here with his wife and parents.

Alta, Iowa -- Kermit R. Iverson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Iverson, has been promoted to sergeant. He is stationed in Ireland.

Sheldon, Iowa -- Phyllis Barnes has joined the women’s reserve of the marine corps at Des Moines. An instructor here in girls physical training, history and English, she will continue teaching until called for active duty.

Alta, Iowa – Virgil Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Olson, is spending a 20-day furlough with his parents. He recently returned from Guadalcanal.

Private Warren E. True, son of Mr. and Mrs Willis W. True, 713 ½ Wall Street, has completed a course in airplane mechanics at the Lincoln, Nebraska air base.

Private John R. Bean, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bean, 1507 Center Street, is chief photographer in charge of the photographic laboratory at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He is attending the military intelligence school for instructors.

Robert Mattaides, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Matthaides of Omaha, formerly of Sioux City and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Radzuweit, 2416 Seve3nth Street, has finished his preliminary coast guard training at St. Augustine, Florida and has been transferred to Point Allerton coast guard station, Hull, Mass

George B. Tillman, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Tillman, 611 Steuben Street, has arrived at the naval training station at Norfolk, Virginia for preliminary training.

Master Sergeant Anthony Balchunist, 119 Fairmount Street, has been graduated from the noncommissioned officers staff school at the Edgewood arsenal, Maryland. He qualified for a chemical section.

Edward F. Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Rogers, 1706 S. Palmetto Street, has been promoted to corporal at the Stockton, California ordnance base.

Corporal Warren Fleckenstein and Private Robert Fleckenstein, both sons of Mr. and Mrs. Will Fleckenstein, 1923 West Street, have returned to duty in the army after furloughs spent with their parents. Corporal Fleckenstein has been transferred from Camp McQuaid, California, to the Coyne Electrical School at Chicago. He is attached to the coast artillery. Private Fleckenstein is stationed at Camp Anza, California, where he is with the military police.

Private Donald LeRoy Ellsworth is stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he is learning the art of sending and receiving radio codes. His wife resides at 904 ½ Morningside Avenue.

Private Cecil R. Griffith has returned to his duties in the army air corps at Hammer field, Fresno, California, after spending a 10-day convalescent furlough with his wife and son, Lakeport Road.

Sergeant Dell W. Long, whose wife lives at 804 Pierce Street, has been promoted to staff sergeant in the army at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi.

Robert C. Scheff, who lived in the home of Mrs. A. C. Petersen, Lakeport Road, for several years while attending East High School, has reported for “boot” training at the naval training station, Farragut, Idaho.

Harry Fremont Nourse, son of Dr. And Mrs. Harry F. Nourse, 3158 Glenn Avenue, has completed his basic training at Great Lakes naval training station. He is rated as an electricians’ mate, third class, and has been appointed an instructor at the base.

Alvord, Iowa – E.C. Schlotfeldt, son of H.H. Schlotfeldt of Alvord, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant, according to word received here from Fort Sam Houston where he is stationed.

Alvord, Iowa – Private First Class Albert Berg of Camp Hood, Texas, has returned to his duties after spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Berg of Alvord.

Whiting, Iowa - Royal G. Bowers aviation mechanic from Kelly field, San Antonio, Tex. is home on furlough visiting his wife, his year-old daughter and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Bowers. Their oldest son, Charles Elwood, is a motor machinist’s mate first class in the Navy.

Sheldon, Iowa – Ralph Sigman of Sheldon is stationed with the signal corps in North Africa. His aunt in Sheldon received a letter from him this week in which he said he had not seen any Sheldon boys since leaving Northern Ireland for service in Africa.

Marathon, Iowa – Mr. and Mrs. William Kruse of Marathon have four sons in the army. They are Private First Class Eppo Kruse, who left in May,1941 and is now somewhere in North Africa; Private First Class George Kruse of Camp Hood, Texas; Private John Kruse, Fort Lewis, Washington and Private Peter Kruse of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. John and Peter Kruse entered the service in December 1942.

Ashton, Iowa – Mr. and Mrs. James Rath of Ashton received word that their son, Private First Class Verne J. Rath has arrived safely in the southwest Pacific recently. His brother, Private First Class Kenneth W. Rath is stationed at Fort Bragg, north Carolina.

Danbury, Iowa -- Frank Treiber has been promoted from fireman first class to machinist mate second class at the naval air station at Corpus Christi, Texas. He is the son of Tony Treiber of Danbury.

Oto, Iowa -- Private Jess L. Benton, Jr., and Private Ralph H. Benton, only sons of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Benton, Sr., of Oto, are in service. Jess is at the front in Africa and has been approved for officer candidate school. Ralph is in the army air corps at Kearns field, Utah.

Schaller, Iowa -- Fred McElwee and son, Oren, enlisted in the United States navy together. They passed their final examination at Des Moines.

Storm Lake, Iowa – Wayne Peterson, 19, who has been fighting with the marines in the Pacific war zone since October, telephoned his mother, Mrs. Louise Peterson, from San Diego, California, saying that he had been injured and is coming home on a leave soon.

Wall Lake, Iowa – Fritz Schroeder, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Schroeder, has been sent to Farragut, Idaho, to begin training as a navy recruit. He was employed in Sioux City at the time of his induction.

Sheldon, Iowa – Private Wallace F. Bunker of Sheldon, killed in action in north Africa on February,19, this year, has been awarded the Purple Heart posthumously for bravery in action under fire and for the wounds he received. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bunker of Sheldon, received a certificate from the war department this week. Private Bunker was a graduate of the Sheldon High School, where he was a star athlete in football and basketball.

Wall Lake, Iowa – Theodore Klockner, a senior at Wall Lake high school, was called to Minneapolis Tuesday to complete examinations for entrance into the V-5 program of the naval air corps.

Hornick, Iowa -  Paul D. Christensen, seaman second class has entered the carpenters service school at Great Lakes, Illinois.

Storm Lake, Iowa --  Bob Pendleton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pendelton of Storm Lake, helped condition the planes that were used in the raid on Tokyo, he has informed his parents. Pendelton an aviation machinist’s mate, third class, aerial gunner, is believed now on his way to come battle zone.

Pocahontas, Iowa – In honor of the late Lieut. (J.G.) Aloysius Herman Schmitt, United States Navy, the name Schmitt has recently been assigned to a destroyer escort vessel, according to a letter received by Mrs. Elizabeth Buchheit of St. Lucas, Iowa, sister of Rev. Father Schmitt, from the navy department. Mrs. Buchheit has been designated as sponsor for the U.S.S. Schmitt, which is scheduled to be launched at the plant of the Bethlehem Steel Company, Quincy, Mass., June 1. Rev. Father Schmitt was among the first causalities of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
