Delmar Biggerstaff of Sioux City, stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama, has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His wife, Mrs. Marie Biggerstaff, lives at 719 W. Third Street.

Private Joseph M. Linde, 1214 Douglas Street, has arrived at Camp Polk, Louisiana, for training and has been assigned to an armored infantry regiment.

Harold Francis Carpenter, 1119 Pierce Street, who recently enlisted in the naval reserve as a shipfitter, third class, has begun a period of recruit training at the Great Lakes training station.

Lieut. Burton E. McKenzie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. McKenzie, 3212 Fourth Avenue place, a flight commander at Dale Mabry field, Tallahassee, Florida, has been promoted to captain.

Robert D. Kass, 3024 Pierce Street, has reported at the naval air station at Corpus Christi, Texas, to begin a training course that will lead to navy wings.

Arthur R. Kobernus, 1620 Silver Street; James McLaughlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Henicks, 1524 w. Second Street; Fred James Norton, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Murphy, 515 James Street, and Jack D. Norton, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Norton, 1600 W. Second Street, are undergoing recruit training at the Great Lakes Naval Station.

Col. And Mrs. C.W. Johnson, who have been visiting his mother, Mrs. Oscar Johnson, 1309 Jennings Street, left Friday to visit Mrs. Johnson’s relatives in Des Moines. Col. Johnson has been transferred from Hawaii to Arlington, California. Last Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gustafson presided at a dinner in the Jackson Hotel where Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were honored guests. Thursday evening his mother, Mrs. Johnson entertained relatives at her home for dinner.

Lieut. Frank W. Oliver, who has been stationed at Camp Davis, North Carolina, is spending a few days with his parents, Judge and Mrs. Ralph A. Oliver, 4118 Perry Way, before going to his next post.

Sergeant Louis S. Weinberg, son of Mr. Lipman Weinberg, 112 24th Street, has reported for a special course of instruction in the gunnery department of the armored force school at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

H.A. Morrill, formerly district manager of the Weyerhaeuser Lumber Company, has been promoted to the rank of major in the post headquarters detachment at Camp Phillips, Salina, Kansas, according to word received by his wife Golden, 3901 Orchard Street. Mrs. Morrill plans to leave soon to join her husband at Camp Phillips.

Private Lloyd Alvin Brown, stationed in San Diego, is spending a furlough with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Brown, 501 W. 27th Street. Private Brown enlisted in the marines six months ago. He will be accompanied to San Diego Saturday by his wife.

Sioux City Survivor of O’Brien Believed in San Francisco Now


Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Stevens, 1609 Isabella Street, expect a message shortly from their son Everett, who, with the rest of the crew of the destroyer O’Brien, was saved after the craft was sunk by the Japanese in the Pacific action September 15 in which the aircraft carrier Wasp went down.

An Associated Press dispatch from San Francisco Monday night indicated the men have arrived there and quoted the commanding officer of the O’Brien, Lieut. Comdr. Thomas Burowes, as asking that “the families of the men aboard our ship know that while there a few minor injuries, not one of the more than 200 men was killed.”

Corporal Lloyd F. Donovan, stationed in the army air corps at Lubbock, Texas has been promoted to sergeant. Sergeant Donovan’s wife, the former Eva Mae Gensichen, resides at 1423 Douglas Street. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Donovan, 1404 W. Palmer Avenue.

Charles R. Weisz, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.T. Weisz, 2112 Isabella Street, is reporting Wednesday to the army air corps reception center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, having enlisted in the service this week after his return from Mitchell, South Dakota where he has been employed as a civilian in the army engineer’s office. Prior to the work at Mitchell, Mr. Weisz was finance officer of the national youth administration here.

Ensign Ray F. Treinen and Private Robert D Treinen, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Treinen both have been visiting their parents. Ensign Treinen, stationed at New London, Conn, with the coast guard is home on a 10-day leave. Private Treinen, who is stationed at the Sioux Falls air base where he is a radio technical student, spent the weekend here.

First Class Seaman Donald L Olsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Olsen, 815 Douglas Street, is in training with the Seabees at Camp Bradford, Norfolk, Virginia.

Corporal Al Uran, stationed at Camp Barkley, Texas, is spending a 10-day furlough visiting his wife at 1909 Pierce Street and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Uran, 902 Jackson Street.

James Curry has returned to California after a visit with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Paul J. Curry, 2216 Douglas Street. Mr. Curry, who has been working for the Douglas Aircraft Corporation in Santa Monica, California has reported for training in the navy air corps.

Edward M. Stevens, second class aviation machinists mate who was aboard the destroyer O’Brien when the ship was sunk in October during the battle of the Solomon’s has arrived safely in San Francisco. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Stevens, 1609 Isabella Street, received this assurance Wednesday morning. The message closed with the information, “Will be home as soon as I get new clothing.”

Private W.G. Patterson, whose wife resides with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Paterson, 1713 Ross Street, has arrived at Fort Francis E. Warren, Wyoming. Private Patterson is assigned to the quartermaster’s corps.

First Class Private Arndt Gunderson, who has been stationed on the west coast, has been sent overseas, according to word received by his father, Carl Gunderson a farmer residing near Lawton.

Robert Leedom is spending a one-week leave with his mother, Mrs. Lillie Leedom, 1407 Chicago Avenue. He came from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station where he has been for weeks. He expects to attend trade school as a torpedo man on his return to duty. Robert’s brother, Homer Leedom, 18, is attending advanced aviation school in Chicago. He has been in the navy for the last year and a half and two weeks ago spent a leave with his mother here.

Private First Class Ronald Savage of the Marine Corps has arrived for a few days’ visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Savage, 4430 Springfield Street. Private Savage has been stationed at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.

George Murphy of the Navy, stationed at Norfolk, Virginia is spending a 10-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Murphy, 605 Lafayette Street.

Lieut. Gordon Ellis, attached to the induction center of the army at Milwaukee as a psychologist, spent the early part of the week with his wife at their home, 1711 Jones Street, arriving a few hours after she had given birth to their first child. Lieut. Ellis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Ellis, 820 Jackson Street. He entered the service six weeks ago at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Lyle V. Cummings, brother of Mrs. E. S. Petersen, 1323 Jennings Street and uncle of Mrs. Mary O’Connor, 801 Fowler Street, has been inducted in the army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Aviation Radioman Everett A. T. Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Davis Anderson, 912 29th Street, is home on a brief furlough. Open house between 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday will be held by him at the home of his parents.

Second Lieut. Melvin C. Olson has left for Camp McCoy, Wisconsin after spending a 10-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Olson, 3102 Leech Avenue. Lieut. Olson obtained his commission at an officer’s training course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, before coming here on his leave. He is a graduate of East High School.

Corporal Orville W. Barkley has returned to the Lincoln, Nebraska air base where he is an instructor in the army technical school, after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Barkley of Elk Point.

Private Vincent Keiser, stationed at the reception center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, left Wednesday after spending a four-day furlough with his wife, 1305 28th Street.

Moses Yanney, 1210 Eighth Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal at the army air forces advanced flying school at Hobbs, New Mexico. Corporal Yanney is a Central High School graduate.

Corporal Marshall E. Soderberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Soderberg, 2314 Jones Street, has been transferred from the base weather station at Lowry field, Denver, Colorado to Washington for special training.

Vernon L. Reppert, 20, who has completed his training at the Great Lakes training station, is here on leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Reppert, 2016 S. Cedar Street. He was graduated from East High School.

Private Roy Eugene Leahy of Fort Benning, Georgia is spending a 14-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Eva Leahy, and brother, Hugh Leahy, in Davenport.

Al Jeager of Marcus, Iowa and DeWayne N. Eyler, 615 W. Fourth Street, have enlisted in the air corps and left for a training center in Texas. DeWayne is the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Eyler to join the armed forces. Orville C. Eyler is at the station at San Diego.

Corporal Ed A. Wendel, finance officer at Williams field, Chandler, Arizonia, is spending a furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Wendel, near Bronson.

Corporal Milo Johnson is visiting his mother, Mrs. Elsie Washburn, 2807 W. Cottage Avenue, while on a 15-day furlough from Camp Barkeley, Texas. His brother, Private Louis Johnson, is stationed in Alaska.

Private Arthur David McFarland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas P. McFarland of Sioux, has been transferred from Fort Riley, Kansas, to the Oklahoma City air depot, where he is a member of a military police company.

First Class Private Robert O. Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Williams, 2804 First Street, has arrived overseas with Uncle Sam’s marines. He recently was graduated at the San Diego Marine Base from the cooks and bakers school and also won marksman and bayonet medals on the range. Private Williams was graduated from East High School last June.

Aviation Cadet William G. Stickels, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Stickels, 2610 Virginia Street, departed from the San Antonio aviation cadet center preflight school this week for primary flying school.

Aviation Cadet Walter J. J. Tokarczyk, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Tokarczky, 1023 S. Fairmont Street, has been graduated from preflight training school at San Antonio, Tex. and departed for primary flying school.

Lieut. Milton Grossman, who has been transferred from the station hospital at Hobbs, N.M. to Fort Lewis, Washington, stopped here with his wife on the trip to his new post. While here they visited Mrs. Grossman’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Shindler, 1715 Nebraska Street.

Staff Sergeant Wayne A. Dirksen, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Dirksen, 4328 Tyler Street, has arrived here from Greenville, S.C. to spend a 10-day furlough. He will report to the advanced glider pilot school at Stuttgart, Ark.

Aviation Cadet Maurice Raskin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Raskin, Sergeant Bluff, is visiting in Sioux City briefly before reporting to the advanced air training school at Craig field, Selma, Ala., where he will complete his instruction in January.

Private Clarence A. Peterson, son of Mrs. Jesse Peterson, 317 W. Third Street, has returned to Sheppard field, Texas, after a 14-day furlough spent visiting his mother.

Sergeant Robert D. Morgan, stationed with the air corps at Midland, Texas, is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Morgan, 1005 Jones Street, while on furlough.

Walter R. Bradley, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bradley, 1213 14th Street, stationed at San Diego, has been promoted to seaman, second class.

Sergeant Robert C. Barboe, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Barboe, 808 Bluff Street, is not spending a furlough with his parents. The trip home would take too long because the sergeant is in England where he has been since he landed with the American contingent to reach those shores. According to a letter received by his family he will spend his furlough in Scotland. Staff Sergeant Lawrence C. Barboe, a brother, is stationed in Louisiana with a tank destroyer battalion.

Private Tolliver Sumner, son of Mrs. H.E. Murphy, 2319 Virginia Street, has been transferred from camp Crowder, Missouri, to Nashville, Tenn.

Petty Officer Elmer R. Kellogg, who has been spending a short leave with his wife and daughter at 505 17th Street, will return Monday to Great Lakes Naval Training Station for additional training.

Former Sioux Cityan, Franz Hoskins, Helps with Operation Aboard Submarine

Lieut. Franz Hoskins, 27, whose account by letter of a successful emergency appendectomy performed in an American submarine in the South Pacific by five crew members was given in an Associated Press story from Tacoma, Washington, is a native Sioux Cityan and well known here.

The son of Henry Hoskins, former coal and fuel oil dealer, insurance man and former secretary of the Sioux City Gas and Electric Company, Lieut. Hoskins resided here until the family moved to Tacoma while he was attending high school.

According to the Associated Press, Lieut. Hoskins was second in command of the submarine. The chief pharmacist’s mate, only one of the five who had witnessed an operation, headed the “surgical staff.”

Both Franz and his younger brother, Allen, where in the submarine service before the war broke out and December 7 caught both men in Philippine waters.

Although both sons have been able to send a few letters to their parents and at one time, about six months ago, reached the family by transoceanic phone from somewhere in the southwest Pacific, they have not been in the United States since the outbreak of war.

Both Franz and Allen, as well as their father, were active in Boy Scouts work here. Franz and Allen each served as bugler at Camp Kellogg in Stone Park and both were members of musical organizations sponsored by the boy scouts. Mr. Hoskins was a scout-master.

The boys attended Smith School and West Junior School before leaving for Tacoma. The family resided at 1915 Allan Street.

Private John P. Stankiewicz, son of Mr. and mrs. John Stankiewicz, 419 S. Lafayette Street has graduated from the radio school of the air force technical training command of Scottfield, Illinois

Private Melvin B. Fields, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Rosenfield, 2108 Grandview Boulevard, has arrived at the finance replacement training center, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. Prior to induction he was an accountant with David Himmelbrau & Co., C.P.A. firm of Chicago.

Private John (Bob) Swanson, who enlisted in the army October 23, has arrived at Camp Blair, Oregon, and is in the communication platoon in the headquarters department. He is a son of Mr. and mrs. Garfield Swanson, 312 Grace Street.

John W. Lundberg, aviation machinists mate first class, has been returned to Norfolk, Virginia after spending a 15-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Emma Thorsness, 1519 Nebraska Street.

Dan Conley, well known realtor who enlisted in the marine corps, has reported to Des Moines for training at San Diego, California.

Private Elwood Bly, who enlisted from Sioux City in the air corps, is stationed at the Blackland army flying school in Texas. Mrs. Bly has gone to Texas to remain until her husband has finished training.

R.C. Baugous, electrician’s mate, first class, returned by plane to his base after spending a 12-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Bougous, Moville, Iowa. This is his first visit here in four and a half years, since his enlistment, April 19, 1938. He is assigned to a ship in the Pacific and has seen action at Pearl Harbor.

James B. Cabbell, 217 McDonald Street, Sioux City, son of Mrs. Mary Cabbell, has been promoted from private first class to corporal. He enlisted in the air service July 2, and is with the 2d aviation squadron.

Private Roberthakala, Sioux City, has arrived at Camp Wolters, Texas, to begin training as an infantryman. His wife lives at 1317 S. St. Aubin Street.

Harold Orion Charlson, 804 Pierce Street, was graduated last week from the officers candidate school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the field artiliary. He is a son od Jens Charlson, Forest City, Iowa.

Corporal Albert M. Grout, Jr. son of Albert M. Grout, 211 W. 15th Street, is spending a 10-day furlough here. He has been stationed in Georgia.

Lemoine Magee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Magee, 2312 Ninth Street, left this morning for the Great Lakes, Illinois, naval training station after enlisting at Sioux Falls.

Private Don Lawrenson will report Tuesday at San Antonio, Texas for preflight training as an aviation cadet. Private Lawrenson has spent a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Lawrenson, 107 Helen Street, and his wife, the former Virginia Nagel at 2523 First Street.

Frank Harold Scott, seaman first class of New York, is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Scott, 2818 First Street.

Lieut. Wilson Andrews of Camp Hood, Texas will leave Wednesday after a 12-day leave visiting his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Andrews, 2312 S. Maple Street. His brother Eldon has enlisted in the air corps ground crew and also will leave Wednesday.

Dewey E. White, Jr. after seven weeks training with the marines at San Diego, was accepted in the Fourth battalion raider division. He was interviewed by Maj. James Roosevelt, who has charge. Dewey is 18 years old and his parents live at 217 Market Street.

Private Forrest Lawson Lake, a son of Mrs. Hazel Lake, 209 Kansas Street, has been transferred from Camp Dodge to Camp Sibert in Alabama. He is in the chemical warfare division.

Private Joseph Scott of Camp Barkley, Texas, is spending a 12-day furlough with his wife, Mrs. Marion Scott, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy J. Scott, 1301 25th Street.

Albert J. Priebe, carpenter third class, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Priebe, 4516 Arthur Street, while on a 13-day leave. He is stationed at San Francisco.

Aviation Cadet Robert Hudspeth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hudspeth, 1822 Jackson Street, has completed his basic training course at Santa Anna, California, and has been transferred to Morton Air Academy, Blythe, California for primary training.

John P. Donavan, son of Mrs. T.D. Donovan, 1923 Riverside Boulevard and Charles M. Demers, also of Sioux City, have been graduated from a navy school in Chicago as machinist’s mates, petty officers, second class. Both men are now stationed at the Portsmouth navy yard in Virginia

Private Edward M. Cosgrove, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cosgrove of Sioux City, left the army radio technician’s school at Sioux Falls, South Dakota for officers training camp in Virginia.

John Franklin Planalp, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Planalp, 2130 Jackson Street, left Sunday to enlist in naval officers’ training school at Abbott Hall in Chicago.

James C. Goff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Goff, 3417 Fifth Avenue and Lloyd C. Haefs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Haefs, 1825 W. Horne Street, have begun training as bombardier cadets at the Midland A.A.A. bombardier school at Midland, Texas, largest of its kind in the world. In civilian life Cadet Goff was a student and Cadet Haefs a salesman.

Dallas A. Olson, son of Mrs. Clara Olson, has recently been promoted to the rank of corporal technician in the 784th ordnance section of the 84th division at Camp Howze, Gainesville, Texas. Dallas was a Golden Gloves champion in 1935, and was a former East High School athlete and graduate.

Robert M. Johnston, 701 S. Linn Street, operator of a produce company here, enlisted in the marines and has been accepted at Des Moines for duty. He was to leave there for San Diego to begin training.

Harold R. Hopkinson, who is serving with a quartermaster battalion now on maneuvers near Nashville, Tennessee, has been promoted to staff sergeant, according to his wife, Mrs. H.R. Hopkinson, 516 Rebecca Street. Sergeant Hopkinson enlisted in the army last June.

Private First Class William J. Tracy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Tracy of Westfield, Iowa, has been promoted to the rank of corporal. Corporal Tracy is in the medical detachment at Camp Howie, Texas.

Private D.J. Cussen, is serving in Big Springs, Texas with the army air corps as a mechanic.

Eldon Foster, apprentice seaman, will return next Tuesday to the Great Lakes naval training station after spending a seven-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Foster, 2517 S. Cedar Street.

Private Richard J. Henry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Henry, 115 S. Center Street has been stationed at the Midland army flying school, at Midland, Texas. Private Henry enlisted in the service October 23.

Robert Haviland, son of Mrs. Jack Newman, 410 13th Street has been promoted to corporal at Camp Roberts, California.

Harry Bernstein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Bernstein, 1600 Isabella Street, has enlisted as amechanic in the army air corps and has left for training at Fort Worth, Texas.

John S. Meckenis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Meckenis, 2412 Grand Avenue has been promoted to first class seaman on a destroyer in the Pacific. Mr. Meckenis is in the ordnance division of the navy.

Corporal Carl L. Bopp has returned to his duties of drill instructor at the marine base at San Diego after spending a 15-day leave with his wife and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. Alson, 805 Jackson Street. Corporal Bopp enlisted last April. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Bopp of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Private Leo Beebe, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Beebe, 923 LaPlante Avenue, has been assigned to training at Camp Wolters, Texas. His wife is residing at 722 W. First Street.

Private Carl F. Fisher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl F. Fisher, 607 W. Fourth Street, has been transferred from the field music school at the San Diego, California marine base to Camp Joseph H. Pendleton, Oceanside, California.

Sergeant Marvin Beckner, being transferred from Camp Blanding, Florida, to Texas as an instructor, is visiting his wife and daughter at 424 S. Lafayette Street. He will leave for Texas tonight.

Keith L. Hilton, coxswain, will leave Tuesday after spending a 10-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Hazel Funk, 606 Bluff Street. Mr. Hilton was a member of Golden Gloves teams in 1938 and 1939.

Royce Mingo, third class electrician, has departed after spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Mingo, 436 Fawcett Street, and with hgis wife at the same address. Mr. Mingo has been stationed at Birmington, Washington.

Private Werner P. Hoffman, who has been spending a 10-day furlough with his wife and mother, Mrs. C. Hoffman, 1809 Hamilton Street, has returned to Camp Rucker, Alabama. His brother, Private Theodore Hoffman, Friday ended a 13-day furlough spent visiting his mother. He also is stationed at Camp Rucker.

Robert Semple, former municipal employee, has been promoted to the rank of Private first class, according to word received from his wife. Mr. Temple is stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Cadet Karl Milton Schlund, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Schlund, 1904 Glenn Avenue, has reported to the army air force preflight school at Maxwell field, Montgomery, Ala. He is a former student at Nebraska State Teachers college at Wayne. Cadet Schlund had served a year in the army before he received his appointment to the preflight school.

Cadet Edward Henry Haafke, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Haafke of Bronson, served five months in the army before receiving his recent appointment as a cadet in the army air force preflight school at Maxwell field, Montgomery, Ala. He is a graduate of Bronson High School.

Leo Vernon Wittsche, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Wittsche, 2005 Rebecca Street, received his commission as second lieutenant in the engineers corps at recent exercises held at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He is a graduate of Central High School.

Wayne E. Lemke, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lemke, 3215 Douglas Street, recently has been promoted to sergeant. He is stationed at Honolulu and has been in the service since January 30.

Private First Class Orville Stonehocker will leave Sunday to return to Tampa, Florida where he is stationed with a medical corps unit, after spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orville H. Stonehocker, 1219 Ninth Street.

Lieut. Robert A. O’Connor of Fort Lewis, Washington, is spending a brief leave at the home of his mother, Mrs. Frank C. Fowler, 810 22d Street.

Harold De Kay, a graduate of Central High School and of the University of Iowa, has completed his navigation training and has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the army air corps at AEllington field, Texas. He will be stationed at Columbia, S. C. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald De Kay of Chicago, formerly of Leeds.

Aviation Cadet Duane E. Gamet, son of Mr. and Mrs. James I. Gamet, 1835 S. Olive Street, has graduated from the Hancock College of aeronautics at Santa Monica, California and will receive his basic training at Lemoore, California.

Private Donald L. Strong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Strong, 109 Isabella Street, has completed his boot training at the marine base at San Diego, California. He is one of 42 men chosen from 500 who have been assigned to radio technician work in the Utah detail. He will receive elementary training at Logan, Utah, before being sent to Corpus Christi, Texas for advanced work.

Frank E. Kahoun, son of Frank A. Kahoun, is at Randolph field, Texas, serving as a member of the air corps.

Warren Page, who for years was with Frank’s Café, is at Kirtland field, Albuquerque, N.M., taking advanced glider training.

John B. Carey, United States marine, on a leave from Camp Dunlap, Niland, California, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Carey, in the Bellevue Apartments.

First Sergeant Earl R. Hilton has returned to Camp Rucker, Alabama after spending an eight-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Anna Hilton and other relatives at 2720 Dace Avenue. He is completing a seven-year service period in the army.
Another son, Private First Class Jay M. Hilton of Fort Stevens, Oregon, spent a furlough with Mrs. Hilton last month.

Private Floyd T. Smith, 2323 Jennings Street, is in basic training with a flying squadron at the army school at Waco, Texas.

Clayton Oliven Lonseth, 1417 Douglas Street, was one of the members of the recent graduating class of the officers’ candidate school at the Maryland proving ground at Aberdeen, Maryland.

Private Carl H. Counterman is receiving basic training at Laredo, Texas, gunnery school. Before enlisting in the army air corps, he was employed by the Sioux City Board of Education, at Lowell School. Master Sergeant Arthur N. Fulton, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.N. Fulton, 2724 Chicago Avenue, is home on a 15-day furlough from Lockbourne army air base at Columbus, Ohio.

Seaman Edward E. Stephens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stephens, Sr. of Hinton, is home on a 10-day leave. Seaman Stephens has been in the navy almost two years, most of that time of which has been in active patrol duty in the north Atlantic and in the Pacific.

Corporal A.P. Vetkunos, son of Mr. and Mrs George Dapkevich, 2709 Dodge Avenue, spent a few days here with his parents after finishing antiaircraft school at Camp Davis, North Carolina. He departed for Camp Hulen, Texas, to report for active duty.

John R. Sullivan, son of Mrs. J.F. Sullivan, 1822 Douglas Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal at the air force advanced flying school at Stockton field, California.

Norbert W. Gloden, pharmacist’s mate, second class, now stationed at the United States naval hospital at Sampson, New York is spending a short leave at the home of his wife’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. S. P. Mosher, 2215 Kellogg Street.

Second Lieut. Alfred P. Strozdas, a former Sioux City resident, now stationed at Camp Roberts, California, has been promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. Lieutenant Strozdas is special service officer of the infantry replacement training at Camp Roberts.

Floyd Spurlock, who for the last six years has been employed by Swift & Co. in Chicago, is here on a leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Spurlock, 1219 W. Fourth Street. He enlisted in the navy in September and will begin training at Norfolk, Virginia next week as a seaman first class.

Private Marlin McManigal, who has been in the infantry for the last 20 months, 16 of which were spent in Alaska, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. F. McManigal, 519 W. 23D Street. He was under Japanese fire at Dutch Harbor, June 3. He spent several months at Camp Roberts, California. He will leave Monday for Seattle

Paul William Sorensen has been commissioned second lieutenant after having been graduated from Officers training school at Camp Lee, Virginia. Lieut. Sorensen will leave Wednesday morning after spending a 10-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Sorensen, 3330 Court Street. He will be stationed at Los Angeles, where he and his wife will reside.

Keith A. Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Waples, 2701 Dodge Avenue, enlisted in the naval reserve and when ordered to active duty, will report for preflight training at St. Mary’s College, California.

Melvin J. Birmingham, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Birmingham, 2823 Pierce Street, has been advanced to the rank of corporal. He is serving with the army in England.

Robert N. Lahann, son of Mrs. Maud Lahann, 859 15th Street, has been sworn in as a naval aviation cadet in the naval reserve. He will receive his preflight training at St. Mary’s College, California.

Frank Melheim, another son of Mr. and Mrs. Melheim is attending an aircraft mechanics school at Dearborn, Michigan, in the navy. He recently was home on leave.

Private LeRoy Wasson of Camp Russell, Texas, is home on a 10-day furlough visiting his brother Harold.

Private Vernon A. Simmons of Camp Roberts, California, has written his mother, Mrs. Ella Van Slyke, 711 George Street, that he is being transferred. His step-father, Master Sergeant Hugh E. Van Slyke, died October 28 at Camp Polk.

First Lieut. Lee V. Beckford of Sioux City was graduated from the Fort Crook Ordnance automotive school.

Sergeant Louis Cohen, a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Max Kaplan 2500 Jones Street, is visiting here while on a furlough. He is a parachutist at Fort Benning, George.

Private Fritz Kahn, who has been stationed at Nashville, Tennessee, is spending a 10-day furlough here before going to Camp Blanding, Florida where he will be stationed. Mrs. Kahn will join him later there.

Sergeant Leonard P. Nelson, formerly stationed at McChord Field, Washington, has been transferred to the ordnance officer candidate school at Aberdeen proving ground, Maryland. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman H. Nelson, 2515 Court Street.

Private Elias Joseph Coury, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Coury, 1127 S. Mulberry Street, has been graduated from the army air corps training school at Scott Field, Illinois, as a radio operator. He was transferred to advance training in Tampa, Florida. His brother, Fred Charles Coury, joined the navy September 29 and has completed basic training in San Diego. He now is second class seaman and in radio school there.

Sergeant Raymond Hamm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hamm, 402 14th Street, has been transferred from Davis-Manson Field at Tucson, Arizona to Diggs Field at El Paso, Texas.

Corporal Paul G. Sloan, son of Mr. and Mrs Walter G. Sloan of Sioux City and a former member of the Sioux City Symphony orchestra and the Monahan Post band, is attending an army band school for directors at Fort Myers, Virginia. He formerly was a member of the infantry band at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.

Private Clyde O. Bogenrief has returned to Camp Forrest, Tennessee, after spending a five-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bogenrief, 4319 Filmore Street.

Private Frank F. LaScala, son of Joe LaScala, 714 Clark Street has been transferred to Camp Young, California, from Fort Riley, Kansas, where he received his basic training in ordnance service.

Private Elmer E. Trulock has reported to his station at Camp Barkeley, Texas. Private Trulock’s wife and son reside at 2108 Geneva Street and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Trulock, at 2803 Center Street. His brother Corporal C.R. Trulock, is stationed at Camp Rucker, Albama.

Corporal Stanley Karpuk has been promoted to sergeant at Camp Barkeley, Texas. His brother, Private Edward Karpuk, is stationed at Chanute field, Rantoul, Illinois and another brother, Joe, will leave Friday to report for service at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Karpuk, 1217 S. Linn Street.

Robert D. Lester, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lester, 2410 Myrtle Street, a member of the army air corps, now is stationed at Miami Beach, Florida.

William E. Carlberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Carlberg, of Inglewood, California, former Sioux Cityans, and a grandson of Alfred Carlberg, 836 18th Street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant. A younger brother, Robert E. Carlberg, who is in the same unit, holds the rank of sergeant. Both boys are stationed in the Fiji Islands. Another brother, Donald E. is an employee of North American Aviation.

Weslie Ducommun has reported for duty at Corpus Christi, Texas, where he will be an instructor in a naval aviation school. He received his commission as lieutenant, J.G. last August. He was employed at the Montgomery Ward store here. His mother, Mrs. Rose Ducommun, resides in Cleghorn.

Private Clarence W. Anderson, United States air corps, who has been stationed at Sheppard field, Texas, has been transferred to the Curtiss – Wright Technical institute. Glendale, California. He is a son of Mrs. Josephine Anderson, 205 Court Street.

Charles Frederick Matthews is a gun captain serving on a United States ship. He has served in the navy five years and in 1941 he received a good conduct medal. His brother, Private Ernest W. Matthews, is serving on foreign soil in the field artillery. They are sons of Mrs. J.H. Hamann of Danbury.

Corporal Technician Donald M. Brewer and his wife, the former Geraldine Burns, arrived here Sunday from Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, for a 14-day furlough. Corporal and Mrs. Brewer also will spend a week with Mrs. Brewer’s parents at Des Moines before returning to Louisiana.

Irving C. Eells, former Sioux Cityan, is now a first lieutenant and operations officer in the army air corps at Hill field, Utah. He is the son of the late Harry Eells and Mrs. Eells, the former Anna Moore, well known Sioux City contralto, who now lives at Los Angeles.

Urban E. Labreck, Sioux Cityan who before his enlistment resided at 1701 Jones Street, has been promoted to technician fifth grade, at Camp Barkeley, Texas, where he is attached to the 40th station hospital.

Sergeant James W. Tallman, stationed at Camp Barkeley, Texas, in the infantry, will arrive in Onawa Wednesday to spend a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Tallman, lifelong residents of that city. Sergeant Tallman was inducted last March 1.

Corporal Harold Nelson, brother of Mrs. Pauline Phillips, 5300 Wellington Avenue, has been transferred from Clarabell, Florida to Fort Ord, California. He is serving with the army engineers.

Corporal Richard Miller, son of Mrs. Wilbur Wood, Smithland, Iowa, has been transferred from Tampa, Florida to Kansas City, Missouri. He is a member of the signal corps.

Private Willis Mayhew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mayhew, 2501 S. Lakeport Street, will arrive from Albuquerque, N.M., today to spend a 10-day furlough with his parents.

Aviation Cadet Max Kurtz, son of Daniel Kurtz, 813 Main Street, has begun training at the Santa Ana, California air base.

John Pojunos, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Pojunos of Elk Point, South Dakota, formerly of Sioux City, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. He is stationed in the Solomon Islands.

Private George J. Pearson of Duncan field, San Antonio, Texas, in a letter to The Journal scored a radio talk he reported he has heard over KSCJ, Sioux City station. Private Pearson wrote that the speaker asserted Sioux City would be bombed before the war ended. Scoffing at such a prediction, the Duncan field soldier wrote that if the city were bombed, it would be an “inside job by some crank who enjoys comforting the enemy.” He said Sioux City was far from a military objective.

Private John E. Williams of Hinton has arrived at Amarillo field, Texas to begin a course in aviation mechanics at the army air corps technical school there.

Seaman Clyde E. Wagner has telegraphed from the Philadelphia navy yard to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wagner, 1620 Jackson Street, that he will leave the eastern city December 14, coming home on 20 day leave. News dispatches chronicling the safe arrival at Philadelphia of the light cruiser Boise, to which young Wagner is attached, told of sketches of Japanese craft painted on the sides of the Boise-craft sunk in the Solomon’s Battle in which the Boise participated. Wagner told his parents it was he who painted the sketches.

Maurice H. Jensen, son of Mrs. Marian Jensen, 317 S. Leonard Street, has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at Fort Mac Arthur, San Pedro, California.

Seaman Jack Scaletta, son of Mrs. Edith Scaletta, West Hotel, is undergoing a 16-week course in the school for gunners’ mate at the Great Lakes naval training station.

Lieut. J. Robert Sterling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sterling, 1814 W. 18th Street, is home on leave for Thanksgiving from Rapid City, S.D., where he is in the army air corps. He expects to leave soon for a new assignment at Walla Walla, Washington.

Staff Sergeant Harry Aaron Kayne, son of Mrs. J. Kanotsky, 918 31st street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant on completion of the officer’s candidate course in the infantry school at Fort Benning, Georgia. He attended Central High School here.

Robert Arnsdorff, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Arnsdorff, 1512 Virginia Street, who was stationed at Godman field, Fort Knox, Kentucky, has been promoted to sergeant. Before enlistment he was owner of the Tristate photo service.

Roy Black Cox, son of Mrs. E.A. Erickson, 1924 Nash Street, has been transferred to a receiving ship with the navy in New Caledonia. He has served with the navy since 1937. Another son, Raymond Erickson, departed Saturday for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to begin service with the army.

Zearl Fouse, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Fouse, 811 Cook Street has been promoted to sergeant in the army force stationed at Camp Haan, California. Sergeant Fouse enlisted about seven months ago and was stationed at Camp Wallace, Texas, prior to his transfer to Camp Haan.

Earl J. Chaussee, seaman second class, Thursday night telephoned his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Chaussee of Sioux City, from an east coast port, saying that he had just returned from a trip to north Africa. Seaman Chaussee was aboard a ship that carried and convoyed United States troops to Algeria. He told his parents that he had seen much action on the trip.

Seaman Leo Samsel, stationed with the United States coast guard at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is home on a 10-day leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Samsel, 1022 Irene Street and two brothers, James and Gerry. Accompanying him is his wife. Seaman Samel enlisted two months ago.

Robert E. Cunningham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald H. Cunningham, Sioux apartments, has completed training in the medical administrative corps officer’s candidate school at Camp Barkeley, Texas and will receive a commission as a second lieutenant. Cunningham was a former star athlete at Nebraska State Teachers College at Wayne.

Private Charles L. Irvin, husband of Mrs. Irvin, 1512 Pierce Street and Private Hiram H. Lias, brother of Wayne Lias of Westfield, Iowa, have been assigned to basic training at the armored force replacement training center at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Sergeant J. Levine, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Levine of Los Angeles, former Sioux Cityans, is visiting his grandmother, Mrs. Goldie Levine, 1413 Myrtle Street, and in the Maurice Baumsten home, 819 18th Street. He is stationed at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Mrs. Baumsten has received wird that her son, Herb has been promoted to the rank of sergeant at Clearwater, Florida. Another son, Sid C. Baumsten was recently promoted to the rank of corporal. He is in the army, stationed at Macon, Georgia.

Corporal Perry Aust will return soon to Victorville, California whre he is stationed with an army air corps unit, after spending a 15- day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Aust, 2203 Villa Avenue.

Sergeant Dorence R. Jolin, son of Mrs. Caroline Jolin, 1120 W. Fifth Street; Sergeant Roman A. Lukes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Lukes, 2433 W. Fourth Street and Staff Sergeant LeRoy V. Muth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude L. Muth, 3514 Fifth Avenue, have returned from Northern Ireland and have entered the officers’ candidate course at the infantry school at Fort Benning, Georgia. Others from Iowa in the group returning from Ireland, who also have entered the course, include Staff Sergeant Kenneth L. Hoffman, LeMars and Sergeants Harold H. Hanson and Donald D. Meyer, both of Webster City.

First Lieut. Lewis J. Dimsdale, medical corps, 18 Blackstone Avenue, was graduated Saturday from the medical field service school at Carlisle barracks, Pennsylvania.

Corporal Carl F. Altimus, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Altimus, 3314 Seventh Avenue, has left for Sheppard field, Texas, after a furlough spent with his parents. He is an instructor in the air corps technical school.

Private Jack Swanson has landed safely in northern Africa according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Helen Swanson, 212 14th Street. Since August, Private Swanson had been stationed in a surgical hospital in England. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Swanson, 312 Grace Street.

Lieut. Edwin C. Schafter who is stationed with the army air corps at Greenville, S.C., spent Thanksgiving with his mother, Mrs. Anna Schafer, 1409 Isabella Street.

Joseph H. Rosenblum of Sioux City has been assigned to the Los Alamitos base in California for primary flight training following his graduation from the navy preflight school at St. Mary’s college, California.

Lieut. Hoadley Dean, former Journal-Tribune reporter, stopped in Sioux City briefly today on his way back to Camp Dodge, Iowa, from Seattle.

Private First Class Sam S. Lascala, son of Mrs. Lena La Scala, 1611 Eighth Street, is spending a 10 day furlough with his mother. He is stationed at Madison Barracks, New York.

Private Robert E. Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Paul, 4220 Central Avenue, is spending a 14-day leave with his parents. Private Paul, who enlisted in the marines July 23, is assigned to the personnel office, office of the commanding general at the Marine Corps base at San Diego, California.
