The Legion Auxiliary donated a swing set and two teetertotters to the city park. They also voted to sponsor a training course in first aid. Leonella Kleve was selected as their candidate to Girl's State this year.

Carey's West Side Station advertised regular gasoline for 25 1/2 ¢a gallon—2¢ below their competitors.

The graduates from O.H.S. this spring were: Gordon Barness, Janet Felix, Marlene Martens, Dorothy Gullickson, Mary Meyer, La Verna Monroe, Roger Peck, Richard Sand, Alice Torresdal and Connie Mae Ward.

The following students received diplomas from De Sales: Dianne Brom, Dianna Bushman, Phyllis Durnan, LaVerna Ehler, Joan Hawkins, Jacqueline Reilly, Frances Schildmeyer, Rosalind Lansing, Robert Einck, Frank Figge, Elmer Hemesath, Mark Hemesath, Robert Leuenberger, Patrick Rooney and Dale Uhlenhake.

Rosalind Lansing was the winner of a popularity contest conducted by the Schmitz Furniture Store. She was awarded a Lane cedar chest. Jacqueline Reilly received Samsonite luggage as runner-up and a Purrey blanket was given to Alice Torresdal for her third place finish.

The Commercial Club sponsored drawings for cash prizes again this summer. Participants were required to register at Ossian's business houses.

The faculty members of the public school included: G. D. Olive, superintendent; Roland Wendel, coach; Mrs. R. Wendel, biology; Mrs. Harry Hubbard, english; Walter Hennis and George Todd, music; Loretto McGary; Mrs. Emma Bothel; Mrs. Silas Sevat-son; and Sylvia Becker.

Six scholars attending O.H.S.—Jean Felix, Elizabeth Fiskerbeck, Beverly Buddenberg, Donald Mundt, Marjorie Sand and Karel Rawson—ranked within the top ten percent of Iowa students in this fall's academic examinations.

A two-day harvest festival was held in the new De Sales auditorium. Fifty two prizes, donated hy the business houses, were awarded to holders of raffle tickets. Bill Brockman, who purchased the lucky dance ticket, was given a television set. Eleven hundred and sixty one hungry members of the community were served Sunday dinners by the parish ladies.

A total of 160 ballots were cast in the municipal election this fall. These officials were elected: Terry Vikre, mayor; Silas Sevatson, treasurer; Elmer Rosa, Don Wessels, Leonard Wagner, Raphael Moellers and Ralph Wiltgen, councilmen.

The Commercial Club sponsored a "bonus day" in lieu of Turkey Day in November. Shoppers were invited to register at any, or all, co-operating business houses. Drawings were held at each store with a total of $400 awarded as prizes.

Kenneth Schmitz was the winner of a Voice of Democracy contest at Decorah. He received a $25 savings bond and certificate for outstanding accomplishment. His winning speech was recorded by station KWLC for entrance in state-wide competition.

A Christmas party for the community's youngsters was held in the opera house on December 19th. Over five hundred young guests were treated to lunch, entertainment and gifts from S_anta. Mrs. G. F. Wallmark and Mrs. M. J. Miller were the ladies in charge.

There were still grocery bargains at Ossian in the fall of 1953. Some examples are: lettuce—2 for 25¢; oranges—24 for 49¢; corn—10¢ a can; peaches—3 cans for 79¢  sugar—10 lbs. for 95¢; celery—19¢; and grapefruit—10 for 39¢.
