Four Ossian high school girls were awarded ratings in the top two percent of Iowa's students after competing in the state tests of educational development. These outstanding scholars were; Mary Louise Schulze, Irene Torresdal, Alice Torresdal and Janet Felix.

The annual municipal financial statement showed a large increase in both receipts, $75,098 and expenditures, $77,569. The town now has indebtedness of $40,000 for bonds sold to finance the new sewage disposal plant.

Irene Torresdal was selected by the Legion Auxiliary as their candidate to attend Girl's State.

Ten seniors received their diplomas at O.H.S, They were: Marvin Mundt, Conley Schweinifus, Donald Martens, Lein Knudsvig, Miles Oyloe, Anton Larson, Darlene Stendel, Mary Louise Schulze and LaVonne Jermeland.

The graduates from De Sales were: Madonna Beckman, Warren Brom, Germaine Hemesath, Irene Hemesath, Norma Jean Holthaus, Warren Holtey, Helen Hunter, Shirley Kleve, Lois Klisart, Lidwin Lansing, Colette Leuenberger, Joan Rooney, Florence Rosenbaum, Mary Lou Schmitz, Robert Schroeder, Marlyn Timp and Mark Uhlenhake.

Paul Gerlich was appointed to the position of town clerk following the resignation of Mrs. Thora Mosby. He was hired as a full-time employee in August with a monthly salary of $225. Rex Ward had been employed in April as marshal and water superintendent at $250 a month.

The farmers of the community have formed the Ossian Rural Truck Society and contributed $12,000 to the purchase of a new fire truck. It will be housed at Ossian, manned by local firemen, and used for rural calls. Membership in this group may be purchased at the bank for $50.

Vernon Gueder replaced Richard Daniels on the faculty of O.H.S, The school's enrollment has risen to 162. Salaries of the present staff are as listed:

The Rev. E. J. Frost is in charge of a nine member staff of teachers at De Sales school. This fall's registration is listed at 277.

Pal, a beautiful black animal, owned and shown by Cleo Cahill, was declared the winner of the Iowa championship for three-gaited horses.

The municipal election resulted in Mayor Funke being elected by write-in votes. He had refused to run again for this post. Don Wessels became the only new face on the council. Silas Sevatson was selected for the office of treasurer.

The Emil Horn family arrived from Germany to their new home at Ossian. They are displaced persons whose emigration was arranged by the Lutheran Resettlement Service of Iowa. The family was sponsored by Philip Schmitz. Mr. Horn, an upholsterer and cabinetmaker, was employed by the furniture store. The new arrivals were tendered a food and clothing shower at the church.
