for the night. Since we had never dared to ascend beyond the second crosspiece, we were quite in awe at this display of daring. Our male ego suffered further deflation when his sister, Jean, confessed to following Sonny up the tower on occasion, and expressed disappointment that he would never permit her to climb beyond the platform circling the base of the tank. This was many years before the present ladder was installed. The diagonal braces on the tower's legs offered the only access to the top.

A window shopping event, with the public matching their issued numbers with displayed merchandise carrying corresponding numerals, was held this Christmas season. Fifty six lucky shoppers received prizes. A free movie was held for the kiddies with Santa distributing sacks of goodies to those in attendance.

There were many grocery bargains in Ossian this winter. Klisart supermarket offered: Jello—3¢; peas—9¢; and puffed wheat—2 boxes for 14¢. Cahill's market lists: Campbell's tomato soup—3 tor 25¢; pork & beans—3 tor 25¢; and apricots —49¢ a gal. Gunderson Dept. Store advertises; Rice Krispies—2 for 25¢; Tide —29¢; and peaches—69¢ a gal. Brockman Grocery has: raisins—2 lbs for 29¢; honey—$1.98 a gal.; and sweet potatoes—3 cans for 25¢.

Audrey Holzer, a senior at De Sales high, was awarded first place in an essay contest sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary and open to all students in Ossian.

The Commercial Club entertained 600 area farmers at a stag party in the opera house on all fools day. A "walking man" contest was held. Lloyd Sampson, Ossian'£ dry cleaner, cleverly disguised, walked across the stage in view of the audience. After each appearance, the master of ceremony, Glen Oyloe, offered verbal hints to his identity in the form of a rhyme. Three guesses were accorded each guest whose name was drawn from the list of registrants. Seven rounds of clues were required before Greg Zweibohmer correctly identified the mystery man. Greg was awarded $200 worth of prizes. Mr. Sampson was so well disquised that he was unable to convince Mrs. Sampson of his participation

Only 47 residents cast ballots in a quiet municipal election. All incumbents were returned to office. Joe Kipp resigned his post of marshal. This office was temporarily assigned to longtime town employee, Anton Hemesath. Harry Oakland was appointed chief law enforcer at the first regular meeting of the council. He, in turn, resigned and was replaced by Pete Nesvik.

The graduates from the public school this spring were: Arthalinda Knudsvig, Ruth Koch, Ileta Martens, Dagne Tinderholt, Helen Jean Bothel, Jack Felix, Conley Linderbaum and Paul Strand.

The students finishing at De Sales were: Arnold Leuenberger, Henry Hemesath, Luke Klisart, Virgil Lansing, Gerald Lansing, George Wolfe, Audrey Holzer, Joan Wiltger* Mary Lou Brockman, Barbara Kapell, Gladys Hertges, Dorothy Hemesath, Jacqueline Uhlenhake, Bernice Hemesath, Jeanette Holthaus and Betty Broghamer.

The second harvest festival, held on the streets in August, was a huge success with attendance estimated at 5000, Lester Hexom served as chairman of this year's celebration. A drawing for prizes was conducted by Francis Giblin. John Jackson of Decorah was the lucky winner of the first prize of $500. A radio, "man on the street", interview program was M. C.'ed by Michael McElroy of station KXEL.

Mrs. Ole Hauge was struck and instantly killed by a Milwaukee passenger train on the West street crossing. Mrs. Hauge's hearing was defective. Evidently she was unaware of the approaching engine.
