The following girls were elected as officers: Doris Hemesath, president; Betty Mae Lansing, vice president; Patricia Murphy, secretary; Jacqueline Uhlenhake, treasurer; Mary Lou Brockman, reporter; and Joan Wiltgen, historian. There were still large stocks of merchandise at reasonable prices in Ossian's stores for the Christmas season. Gunderson Department Store: men's shirts— $1.69 to $2.95; sox—35¢ to 49¢; ladies slippers—$1.79; hosiery—84¢. Schroeder Clothing: Curlee suits—$29.50; overcoats—$19.50 to $35; hats—$2.49 to $7.50. The Commercial Club sponsored a free movie for ’’kiddies" on Dec. 23rd. Santa was on hand to provide a sack of popcorn for each youngster. The Girl Scouts, under the direction of leader Helen Evans, went caroling on Christmas Eve. BUSINESS CHANGES
1945 The public school was burglarized this winter. A small sum of money and janitor Gilbert's overcoat were taken. Sheriff George Harms called for bloodhounds in an unsuccessful attempt to trail the culprits. James Felix reported that the Ossian Theatre now ranks fourth in the state on sales of war bonds. John B. Moellers was appointed enumerator for Military and Washington townships in the 1945 census canvas. Corp. Charles Tupy, a prisoner of the Japanese for over two years, appeared at the opera house under sponsorship of the Commercial Club. He spoke to an overflow crowd of his hairrowing experiences. The seniors receiving diplomas this year from O.H.S. were; Morris Wolfs, Ernest Anfinson, Gregory Sand, Donald Kleppe, Lloyd Weidow, Betty Daniels, Arlette Jermeland, Lorraine Skinner, Nina Martens and Parnell Knudsvig. De Sales high graduated the following: Viola Bohr, Beverly Duman, Marian Einck, Marian Funke, Kathleen Gardner, Norma Jean Holzer, Betty Lansing, Rita Lansing, Irene Rooney, Mary Schildmeyer, Helen Wolfe, Donald Gerleman, William Hemesath, Leonard Johnson, Jack McCulloch, Ireaneus Moeller and Gerald Zweibohmer. Mrs. Amanda Schultz was in charge of the seventh war bond drive. She was assisted by 15 ladies in soliciting the town's residents. Twenty one members of the community donated blood to the war effort at a clinic held in the K. C. rooms under the sponsorship of the Legion Auxiliary. Miss Mary Dinan joined the teaching staff of the Ossian Public School replacing Averie Patridge. Two hundred and forty eight pupils have enrolled at the parochial school this fall. The following stores listed merchandise for sale to Christmas shoppers: Schroeder Clothing—wool suits, $29.50 to $39.50; Gunderson Department Store—ladies quilted robes, $12.29; Klisart's —ladies purses, $3.39 to $6.75; Schmitz Furniture—two piece living room suites, $125 and $135.
