served as coach.

In the year 1942, the Ossian girls again fielded a winning team. They advanced to district play after winning the sectional tourney held at Calmar. The members of this group were: Helen Sand, Irma Witt, Gladys Hanson, Sylvia Johnson, Eleanor Johnson, Angela Huber, Darlene Amdahl, Verna Amdahl, Norma Koch, Eulalia Martens, Betty Daniels and Lorraine Skinner. Radtke was coach; Helen Feller, chaperone; and Verna and Leslie Torkelson, cheerleaders.

The 1943 team was again sectional champions. They were defeated by Steamboat Rock in district play. The record over the past four years for the Ossian public school's sextette was 90 wins against 16 losses.

The following year they were once more sectional champions but were eliminated in district play. However in 1945. following the resignation of superintendent Radtke, the girls lost in sectional play for the first time since 1938.

Evidently, Ossian's entries met with little success until 1948, when the DeSales girls became Winneshiek county champions in a tourney held in the Calmar gym. The roster of this team included: Kay Schissel, Alberta Moellers, Margaret Moellers, Inez Hanken, Jackie Uhlenhake, Gertrude Bohr, Theresa Bohr, Marie Zweibohmer, Mary Klisart, Florence Leuenberger and Arlene Kapell. Doris Hemesath served as chaperone and Audrey Holzer was the cheerleader.

This team was again the champion of Winneshiek county in 1949, but were eliminated by Clermont in the final game of sectional play.

The 1950 season found the public school six back on top as county and sectional champs. The girls on this team were: Jackie Strand, Jo Ann Schultz, Irene Torresdal, Janet Felix, Mary Louise Schulze, La Vonne Jermeland, Barbara Amdahl, Bonnie Flatland, Alice Torresdal, Mary Meyer, Marlene Martens and Connie Mae Ward.

Both of the DeSales basketball teams enjoyed winning seasons as well. The Commercial Club honored the personnel of all four athletic groups with a banquet held in the Stavanger Parish Hall. About 150 members of the community attended the dinner.

The public school hosted both county and sectional basketball tourneys in 1951. The local girls became champiois of the county, but lost to a strong Waterville six in sectionsl play.

The following year, the Ossian Public Sextette defeated their across-town sisters from De Sales for the county crown. But a complete reversal occured in the sectional tournament, when the Catholic girls defeated O.H.S. to become the sectional champs. The members of this squad were; Aquilina Timp, Audrey Kleve, Carol Holtey, Clarinda Bodensteiner, Janice Brom, Rosalind Lansing, Ramona Murphy, Eunice Lansing, Inez Lansing, Joan Hawkins, Elaine Funke, Gladys Lansing and Joan Bohr. The Rev. Frost served as coach; Mrs. C. F. Wallmark as chaperone; and Kathryn Wallmark, Lorna Figge and Audrey Funke were cheerleaders. They posted a record of 17 to 3 for the year.

The basketball players from both schools were again treated to a dinner by the commercial club. Tait Cummings, the veteran sports reporter from Cedar Rapids, was the featured speaker. The banquet was served by the Catholic Daughters of America.

In 1953 the De Sales girls were crowned champions in both county and sectional play. They were downed in district competition by a strong Garnavillo team.

Both of Ossian's schools became members of the newly-formed eight school How-Winn basketball league.

Janet Felix, ace forward of the public school team, won the district free throw contest by making 21 of 25 attempts. Janet advanced to the state finals where her 19 baskets were insufficient for the championship.

A gala banquet, honoring the teams of both schools, was sponsored by the businessmen at the opera house. Mr. Cummings returned as main speaker. About 260 fans enjoyed the ham dinner catered by Elmer Hauge, Mrs. Gurina Hanson and Mrs. Carey.

The De Sales girls became sectional champs for the third consecutive year
