The valuation suggested for assessors were listed as follows; colts—$20 to 30; mules—24 to $44; heifers—12 to $20; cows—$28; steers—20 to $30; feeders—$32; swine—$6; and sheep—$3.

There are a few families in Ossian who are lacking the necessities of life.

The Legion Auxiliary has appointed a committee, including Mrs. H. P. Nicholson, Mrs. Hartvick Knudsvig and Mrs. F. A. Figge, who will distribute donations of food and clothing to the needy.

H. P. Nicholson & Son, dealers in International trucks, staged an unusual contest. A stock model pickup was fitted with a one pint gasoline container in addition to the regular tank. The two drivers who nursed the highest mileage from a pint of gasoline were awarded prizes. The winners, Hartvick Knudsvig and Carl Blumhagen, received $5 and $2.50 in merchandise. Hartvig managed 5.5 miles from the pint—a rate of 44 mpg. There were 31 drivers competing in the contest.

The municipal election was a quiet affair. R. E. Montagne gained the council seat of retiring councilman L. O. Lee. The remaining offices were retained by the incumbents.

There are five sets of twins attending DeSales school this year. They are; Marie and Muriel Schissel, Vivian and Vendolin Holder, Aloysius and Alphonse Zweibohmer, Vivian and Virginia Wiltgen and Gillis and Gerald Gerleman.

Glen Amdahl, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Berge Amdahl, was reported missing. His auto was found abandoned near the Decorah high school. Foul play is suspected and a reward of $200 has been posted. Fifty volunteers from Ossian conducted a search along the Upper Iowa river. Amdahl's hat, pocketbook, gloves and broken eye-glasses were found along the river road. His body was located after a six day search. An autopsy was conducted by the county coroner with Dr. Jerdee of Clermont observing as representative of the Amdahl family. A coroner's jury was convened to hear the testimony of nine witnesses. Their verdict held that death was not felonious.

J. D. Jackson, an itinerant employed by Cole's Cafe, absconded with $28 from the restaurant's till along with several articles of clothing from the adjoining Figge store. He had broken through the partition between the businesses.

Hatvick Knudsvig's hound was attack by a stray dog and subsequently developed rabies. All canines within the corporation have been quarantined and must be confined. Mayor Nicholson issued orders that any dog found running at large must be destroyed.

Six hungry vagrants, one a woman, called at the Bee office with pleas for help. Editor Schmitz writes; "Not a day passes that from one to six unemployed pay us a visit. Some want money, some demand food and others merely ask for a "Hoover Blanket", which means a newspaper (to use) as a blanket for the night. Times are surely tough. God help us if we have another four years of Hoover."

The annual municipal financial report lists receipts of $28,985, disbursements of $11,038. The town's debt has been reduced to $30,900.

T. A. Scheidel again "enjoyed" the distinction of paying the largest tax within the townships of Military, Bloomfield, Springfield, Washington and Frankville. His assessment was $667.20.

Selmer Grovdahl, secretary of the school board, issued the school's annual financial report. It showed receipts of $27,822; disbursements of $11,948. The two male instructors were paid $5,090 in salaries, but the five women received only $4,140.

The graduates this year were; Mary DeCou, Dorothy Ean, Myrtle Halverson, Selma Johnson, Mae Larson, Knut Lee, Norma Lee, Olga Lee, Esther Lotvedt, Marvel Mundt, Hazel Peck, Gustav Rogness, Willard Schlee and Martha Tinderholt.
