1929 Several makes of automobiles were being offered for sale in Ossian this year. Dealers were. John Staska—Hudson, Essex & Chrysler; Beckman garage—Pontiac & Oakland; Will Collins—Buick; Figge Auto Go.—Whippet & Willys-Knight; Dessel Auto Company—Ford; and Nicholson Garage—Chevrolet. Winnie Evan's advertisements for new dresses this spring featured the "Whoopee Junior". Town clerk Collins, in the annual municipality financial statement, lists receipts of $39,798, disbursements of $33,764 and indebtedness of $43,058. School secretary Grovdahl released the financial statement of the Ossian Independent School District. Receipts were $22,836; disbursements, $11,683. The seven member school teaching staff was paid a total of $9765. Editor Schmitz reported that good "moonshine" was selling for $4 a pint over the July 4th holiday. He hastened to add that his knowledge did not come from personal experience. We have been told that there were 33 bootleggers in Ossian. Miss Alma Knoll was hired to replace Ruth Morgan at the high school. The rest of the teaching staff are retained from last year. The O.H.S. graduates in 1929 were: Helen Becker, Matilda Beer, Raymond Daniels, Geraldine Dessel, Oberlin Egeland, Edna Fosaaen, Mary Harvey, Genevieve McManus, Thelma Mosby, Joseph Powers, Reba Rossman, Marcella Scheidel and Leone Spillman. R. B. Jones announced that he will hold a "going out of business sale" after twenty years of merchandising in Ossian. Among the many bargains offered are: ladies' wash dresses—$1.39, handkerchiefs--1¢ each; heavy fleeced union suits--95¢, heavy fleeced undershirts and drawers—67¢; and Rockford sox—10¢. Ralph and Kate Jones were close friends of my parents. I can recall him saying that he considered the residents of Ossian to be among the most honest people in America. It had been his practice, for many years, to leave unretrieved purchases on the sidewalk in front of his store when closing on Saturday nights. Without exception, the merchandise, if unclaimed, was always still there, undamaged, on Sunday morning. The city has installed a fire siren on the water tower. It is automatically operated and will be sounded at 7:00 a.m., 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m. The sound range is put at about four miles. The Milwaukee Road secured a court injunction barring the town and county authorities from selling railway property to satisfy non-payment of paving assessments. The Road contends that the paving was laid on their property without their consent. Blanche Rosa, winner of the 4-H club's competition in home furnishing at the Iowa State Fair, went on to take first place in the national contest at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago.
