1927A1 Beckman resigned his position as town clerk. Irvin Collins was appointed to fill the vacancy. The salary of this office was raised to $110 a year. Editor Schmitz editorialized on a "disgraceful affair" in Ossian's government. Members of the council attempted to arrest marshal Barr when he "paraded" the streets under the influence of liquor. They managed to relieve the officer of his badge and keys, but were unsuccessful in placing him in confinement. The editor declared: "This is far from the first offense, but the mayor has steadfastly refused to remove him from office. If the mayor continues to refuse to take action, the council must. The officer in question was drawing a larger salary, for which he did less work, than any of his predecessors. And he did more damage to town property in a month than any of the men before him did in their entire term of office." Anton Hemesath was appointed as the new marshal. Councilman Rodenkirch took the editor to task for making fun of Rodenkirch's motion to discontinue the tower lighting because of casualties to night-flying birds, attracted by the electric bulb. The councilman demanded an apology. Schmitz replied: "(For me) to apologize is out of the question. We acknowledge no... improper or injurious remarks... A frank discussion of the merits of public measures and of public men...(requires) no apology." H. P. Nicholson advertised Chevrolets from $395 for a half ton chassis to $745 for the Landau. The Figge Auto Company listed new low prices for the Whippet, ranging from $625 to $755. R. B. Jones held a clearance sale with a Shetland pony offered as a prize to the young person accumulating the most votes in a popularity contest. Customers were allowed votes on all purchases. The tabulation was posted in the store each day. Ralph Cornell was the lucky winner of Beauty, the pony, with a total of 1,451,300 votes; Bobby Holder was runner-up with 1,134,100. Ruth Mayer, Lillian Lee and Esther Lee were the winners in the local declamatory contest. Lillian went on to win the dramatic division in the preliminary state competition held at Cresco. The graduates this year were: Agnes Barr, Caroline Beer, Lillian Brown, Raymond Dessel, Mabel Enga, Lea Hemesath, Henrietta Johnson, Francis Klein, Cyrilla Lansing, Esther Lee, Rosamond Mayer, Julian Moe, William Mosby, Albert Nesvik, Kathryn Powers, Arthur Scheidel, Genevieve Sobolik, Cora Tinderholt and Lillian Lee.
